The treatment of resectable gastric cancer: a literature review of an evolving landscape

Iris Tung et al.

Summary: Compared to surgery alone, perioperative chemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy improve survival in resectable gastric cancer patients. However, there are variations in treatment practices worldwide, and patient factors should be considered in deciding treatment approach. Current clinical trials on targeted therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors in the perioperative setting show promising results.

Oncolytic virus: A catalyst for the treatment of gastric cancer

Junqing Wang et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a major contributor to global cancer incidence and mortality, threatening the survival and health of people worldwide. Patients with advanced gastric cancer often do not benefit significantly from traditional treatments due to unobvious early symptoms and factors such as tumor heterogeneity and low immunogenicity. Oncolytic virotherapies, as an emerging cancer immunotherapy, have the potential to effectively treat gastric cancer by selectively lysing cancer cells and inducing a systemic antitumor immune response.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Clinical development of retroviral replicating vector Toca 511 for gene therapy of cancer

Sara A. Collins et al.

Summary: Toca 511 has shown promising results in early-stage clinical trials, progressing to a Phase III trial, however, the results announced in late 2019 were overall negative. Further clinical investigation and development of RRV with other transgene payloads is warranted.
