Chromosome-encoded IpaH ubiquitin ligases indicate non-human enteroinvasive Escherichia

Natalia O. Dranenko et al.

Summary: The pathogenicity of Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli is based on the type 3 secretion system (T3SS) encoded by the pINV virulence plasmid. Recent genomic studies have found ipaH genes in potential marmot pathogens and E. coli from fecal samples of bovine calves, suggesting that non-human hosts may also be infected by these strains. Comparative genomic analysis revealed gene losses, duplications, and inconsistencies between strains phylogeny and composition of effectors, indicating horizontal gene transfer between E. coli adapted to different hosts.

Food Safety Risks and Contributing Factors of Cronobacter spp.

Na Ling et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the prevalence of Cronobacter species in various food types and highlights its high virulence in infants. The mechanisms allowing Cronobacter to persist in adverse growth conditions and its pathogenicity are discussed. The food safety concerns caused by Cronobacter and the subsequent control methods and clinical treatments are emphasized.

Antibiotic Resistance and Molecular Characterization of Cronobacter sakazakii Strains Isolated from Powdered Infant Formula Milk

Babak Pakbin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, genotypic and phenotypic antibiotic resistance profile, and clonal relatedness of C. sakazakii strains isolated from powdered infant formula milk (PIFM) samples collected in Tehran, Iran. The results showed a high prevalence rate of C. sakazakii in PIFM samples, with high resistance to multiple antibiotics and a diverse genetic profile. The study highlights the need for novel microbial surveillance systems to control the contamination of this foodborne pathogen in infant foods.

Phylogenetic analysis and antibiotic resistance of Shigella sonnei isolates

Babak Pakbin et al.

Summary: This study determined the phylogeny and antibiotic resistance profiles of S. sonnei strains and found that most of the strains belonged to lineage III and showed resistance against trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline antibiotics. Shigellosis, caused by different species of Shigella, is considered a serious threat to public health. The lineage/sublineage profile of Shigella sonnei is strongly associated with antibiotic resistance and population structure of the pathogen.

Genetic diversity and antibiotic resistance of Shigella spp. isolates from food products

Babak Pakbin et al.

Summary: The study found a 4.44% prevalence rate of Shigella in food samples, with isolates showing resistance to multiple antibiotics including sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, amoxicillin, and streptomycin. All Shigella isolates were multidrug-resistant, with RAPD-PCR grouping them into five main clusters.

Investigation of antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence factor genes in Trueperella pyogenes isolated from clinical mastitis cases of dairy cows

Iradj Ashrafi Tamai et al.

Summary: Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic pathogen causing important diseases in domestic animals, leading to significant economic losses. This study found that 55% of dairy cows with clinical mastitis symptoms were infected by T. pyogenesis, making it the most prominent contributor to clinical mastitis in dairy cows. Significant correlations were observed between the presence of virulence factor genes, biochemical patterns, and infected types of udders.
