Synthesis, characterization, and swelling behaviors of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-g-poly(acrylic acid)/semi-coke superabsorbent

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: A novel multi-functional superabsorbent polymer (SAP) incorporating semi-coke as a component was successfully synthesized, showing good thermal stability and reusability for water absorption. The SAP exhibited stable water absorption performance under various pH conditions, and significant water absorption effects were observed for different salts and cation types.

Biochar and compost amendments to a coarse-textured temperate agricultural soil lead to nutrient leaching

Veronika Jilkova et al.

Summary: Organic soil amendments, such as biochar and compost, have different effects on soil properties. In this study, it was found that both biochar and compost increased microbial activity and nutrient release in a coarse-textured temperate soil. When added in combination, biochar and compost had additive effects on all properties. Biochar addition also increased soil pH, microbial biomass, and the abundance of certain bacteria and fungi after 6 months of incubation.

Effects of biochar nanoparticles as a soil amendment on the structure and hydraulic characteristics of a sandy loam soil

Xiaopeng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that nano-sized biochar particles (NBC) alter the distribution of soil pore structure and affect the degrees of anisotropy, fractal dimension, soil porosity, and stability of soil aggregates. Additionally, NBC applications increase the water repellency of the soil and decrease the surface energy of soil particles.

Experimental Investigation of the Different Polyacrylamide Dosages on Soil Water Movement under Brackish Water Infiltration

Jihong Zhang et al.

Summary: The use of soil conditioners in conjunction with brackish water irrigation is critical for the efficient development and use of brackish water as well as the enhancement of saline soil structure and stimulating crop growth. This study investigated the effects of different polyacrylamide (PAM) dosages on the water flow properties of sandy loam during brackish water infiltration. The results showed that PAM could lower the soil infiltration rate and increase soil water retention, and had a significant effect on the parameters of the infiltration models. The optimal PAM dosage was found to be 0.04%, which improved soil saturated water content, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and soil water holding capacity.

An over review of desertification in Xinjiang, Northwest China

Yu Xiang et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively reviewed desertification in Xinjiang, China, and discussed the underlying mechanisms and control measures. Human activities were identified as the main cause of desertification, but natural factors also played a role. Key points for desertification control included monitoring and early warning, reversing soil salinization, and proper management of water resources. Recent desertification control projects in Xinjiang have achieved remarkable results. Further research on the stability of the desert-oasis transition zone is crucial.
