MoS2-based hetero-nanostructures for photocatalytic, photoelectrocatalytic and piezocatalytic remediation of hazardous pharmaceuticals

Nisha Oad et al.

Summary: The increase in global consumption of pharmaceutical compounds has led to economic burden and environmental pollution. Conventional treatment techniques can remove these compounds, but MoS2-based heterojunction photocatalytic systems have attracted significant interest due to their unique features. The 2D structure of MoS2-based materials contributes to rapid and stable degradation of pharmaceutical compounds. However, more research is needed to improve the separation of charge carriers and explore the potential of MoS2 for large-scale application.

Controlled synthesis of electrospun TiO2 nanofibers and their photocatalytic application in the decolouration of Remazol Black B azo dye

O. Secundino-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of monocrystalline TiO2 nanofibers with high specific surface area using the electrospinning technique. The nanofibers were annealed at different temperatures to achieve crystalline phase transformation. The chemical stoichiometry, crystalline phase transformation, and optical properties were characterized. The photocatalytic activity of the annealed TiO2 nanofibers was also evaluated.

The experimental design and mechanism study of the rifampin photodegradation by PbS-Co3O4 coupled catalyst

Zeainab Ansaripoor-Jermafshadi et al.

Summary: In this study, a binary Co3O4-PbS nanocatalyst was prepared and characterized. The results showed that Co3O4-PbS has a small crystallite size and band gap energy, as well as a high pHpzc value. The activity of the coupled system was enhanced when the moles of Co3O4 oxide were four times greater than that of another component.

Ultraviolet-based heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes as technologies to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater: An overview

J. Meijide et al.

Summary: Contaminants of emerging concern, including pharmaceuticals, are detected at low concentrations in surface waters, posing potential risks to aquatic life and the food chain. This review focuses on the removal of active pharmaceutical ingredients using ultraviolet processes, such as photo-Fenton, photocatalysis, and photoelectrocatalysis. However, there is limited research on scaling up the systems and testing their effectiveness in real water matrices.

High performance ozone based advanced oxidation processes catalyzed with novel argon plasma treated iron oxyhydroxide hydrate for phenazopyridine degradation

Rasool Pelalak et al.

Summary: The study focused on the degradation of phenazopyridine as an emerging contaminant using catalytic ozonation with novel plasma treated natural limonite under argon atmosphere. Results showed that the synergistic effect between ozone and PTL/Ar nanocatalyst led to the highest efficiency, with the predominant role of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals confirmed. The study also identified main intermediates produced during the oxidation process and demonstrated the superior application of non-thermal plasma for treatment of NL.

Removal of antibiotic rifampicin from aqueous media by advanced electrochemical oxidation: Role of electrode materials, electrolytes and real water matrices

Laysa R. D. Brito et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are commonly detected in aquatic environments and are difficult to remove in sewage treatment plants. Electrochemical technologies, particularly using boron doped diamond (BDD) and carbon felt (CF) as anode and cathode materials, have shown to be effective in degrading antibiotics. Increasing applied current density can improve degradation efficiency.
