Understanding the Low-Voltage Behavior of Stoichiometric Over Lithiated Spinel Li1+xNi0.5Mn1.5O4: An Electrochemical Investigation

Nicola Michael Jobst et al.

Summary: Nickel manganese spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is a promising cobalt-free active material for lithium-ion battery cathodes due to its high operating voltage. However, extending the operating voltage range causes capacity fading, which is explained by the formation and re-transformation of a specific phase.

Crystal structure variation of LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 high-voltage spinel cathode during low-voltage redox reaction

T. Konya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystal structure variation and redox reactions of LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 cathode material at different voltages using operando X-ray diffraction. The results show that a two-phase reaction occurs at low voltages, with the presence of cubic and tetragonal spinel phases. The redox reaction takes place over a wide voltage range, with small capacity fading. Exothermic reactions are observed during charge and discharge stages.

Tailoring Disordered/Ordered Phases to Revisit the Degradation Mechanism of High-Voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Spinel Cathode Materials

Huabin Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the phase compositions of LNMO materials were controlled by post-annealing strategies, and their impacts on electrochemical performance and degradation mechanisms were investigated. It was found that LNMO materials with an intermediate fraction of disordered and ordered phases exhibited improved cycling stability, and a high ordered phase fraction could preferentially protect Ni from dissolution during cycling.

Study of the magnetic properties of LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 spinel: Ab initio calculation and Monte Carlo simulation

Summary: In this study, the exchange integrals for LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 were calculated using the Density Functional Theory with the Hubbard correction U (DFT + U) approach and Full potential Linear Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method. The obtained values of exchange integrals were used as input for Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the magnetization as a function of temperature and external magnetic field for different values of U.

Influence of Transition-Metal Order on the Reaction Mechanism of LNMO Cathode Spinel: An Operando X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study

Marcus Fehse et al.

Summary: This study performed operando dual-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on both transition-metal ordered and disordered Li-Ni0.5Mn1.5O4 materials during the electrochemical delithiation and lithiation process. The analysis of a large dataset using a chemometric approach provided reliable insights into the redox activity and local structural changes of Ni and Mn. The results confirm the dominant redox activity of the Ni2+/4+ redox couple involving a transient Ni3+ phase, and also highlight a reversible minority contribution of Mn3+/4+ in both LNMO materials. While the reaction steps and involved reactants are generally similar in ordered and disordered LNMO materials, differences in reaction dynamics and local structural evolution induced by TM ordering are emphasized.

Advances and Prospects of High-Voltage Spinel Cathodes for Lithium-Based Batteries

Xingwen Yu et al.

Summary: Insertion compounds have been dominant in commercial lithium-ion batteries, while the development of spinel-structured cathodes is slightly behind. The high-voltage spinel cathode LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 shows promising properties but faces challenges in cycling stability, prompting the exploration of strategies to enhance its performance.

Phase Transitions in the Spinel-Layered Li1+xNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (x=0, 0.5, 1) Cathodes upon (De)lithiation Studied with Operando Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction

Oleg A. Drozhzhin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that spinel-layered Li1+xNi0.5Mn1.5O4 materials have similar capacity values and phase transition sequences to Li2Ni0.5Mn1.5O4 materials. Li2Ni0.5Mn1.5O4 is mainly composed of Li-rich layered oxide, providing better cycling stability compared to the single-phase LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 high-voltage cathode material.
