The combined effect of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on arthritis, especially osteoarthritis, in the US adult population

Lanlan Fang et al.

Summary: The evaluation of heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) impact on different types of arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis) is limited, and the combined effect of HMs and PAHs on arthritis is rarely analyzed. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the association between HMs and PAHs co-exposure and arthritis. Using data from NHANES, 9735 adults were included, and different statistical models were used to estimate the effects. The results showed that certain HMs and PAHs were significantly associated with arthritis, indicating the potential impact of co-exposure on arthritis development.

Copper modified cobalt-chromium particles for attenuating wear particle induced-inflammation and osteoclastogenesis

Yanjin Lu et al.

Summary: The presence of wear particles in aseptic prosthetic loosening induces inflammation and osteoclast activation. This study examined the response of Co29Cr9W3Cu particles, compared to Co29Cr9W particles, to inflammatory response and osteoclast activation in vitro and in vivo. In vitro studies showed that Co29Cr9W3Cu particles promoted the generation of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages and reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory factors. It also decreased the expression of osteoclast-related genes. In vivo experiments demonstrated that Co29Cr9W3Cu particles reduced osteoclast activity and osteolysis area. These findings suggest that Cu-bearing cobalt-chromium alloy may delay the development of aseptic prosthetic loosening induced by wear particles.

Association between lead and cadmium co-exposure and systemic immune inflammation in residents living near a mining and smelting area in NW China

Honglong Zhang et al.

Summary: Exposure to both cadmium and lead can promote systemic inflammation, and the effects are exacerbated with increased exposure levels. Subjects in the polluted area had significantly higher levels of Cd and Pb in their blood compared to the control area, and differences were observed in immune inflammation biomarkers. High co-exposure to Cd and Pb resulted in higher levels of immune inflammation markers, indicating a correlation between exposure levels and systemic inflammation.

Abnormal Micronutrient Intake Is Associated with the Risk of Periodontitis: A Dose-response Association Study Based on NHANES 2009-2014

Weiqi Li et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the association between micronutrient intake and periodontitis and found that sufficient intake of vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and copper reduced the risk, while excessive intake of vitamin B1 and copper increased the risk. Furthermore, vitamin B1 and vitamin E showed a nonlinear dose-response association with the incidence of periodontitis.

Dysregulation of metallothionein and zinc aggravates periodontal diseases

Jazli Aziz et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease connected to bacterial infection, in which metallothionein (MT) and zinc (Zn) play vital roles in regulating immune functions, controlling bacterial infection, and balancing inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of MT and Zn could negatively affect periodontal health and contribute to the development of periodontitis.
