Single Atom Catalysis for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction using Transition-metal Atoms Doped g-C3N3: A Density Functional Theory Study

Wenya Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic performance of single transition-metal atom coordinated graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) system. The results show that the g-C3N3 catalyst embedded with Rh-C3N3 exhibits the best electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with metallic behavior and thermal stability. This study provides a new candidate of low-cost, high-performance, and highly active non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Recent advances in developing multiscale descriptor approach for the design of oxygen redox electrocatalysts

Dantong Zhang et al.

Summary: Oxygen redox electrocatalysis plays a crucial role in new-generation energy sources. Accurately identifying the structure-activity relationship based on descriptors is essential for designing ideal electrocatalysts. However, quickly discovering these descriptors remains a challenge. High-throughput computing and machine learning methods have shown great potential for accelerating the screening of descriptors. This review summarizes the new research paradigms for screening multiscale descriptors and provides guidance for the intelligent design of new energy materials.

Study of oxygen reduction reaction on binuclear-phthalocyanine with Fe-Fe, Co-Co, and Fe-Co dual-atom-active sites using density functional theory

Anuj Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the activity and mechanism of binuclear phthalocyanine (bN-Pc) models combined with Fe and Co for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. The results showed that Fe-Co-bN-Pc exhibited stronger ORR performance with a lower energy barrier. This research provides a scientific and engineering perspective for the construction of dual-atom active sites in future ORR electrocatalysts.

Boosting activity of Fe-N4 sites in single-Fe-atom catalysts via S in the second coordination sphere for direct methanol fuel cells

Jincheng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed a low-cost and highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst Fe1/NSG by anchoring single Fe atoms on N,S-codoped graphene. The Fe catalyst center with S atoms in the second coordination sphere regulates the electronic structure and stabilizes the *OOH intermediate in the ORR. Fe1/NSG exhibited high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.90 V vs. RHE and excellent methanol tolerance. The DMFC with Fe1/NSG cathode achieved a peak power density of 198 mW cm-2, outperforming DMFCs assembled with non-precious-metal-based cathode catalysts.

Construction of Dual-Atom Fe via Face-to-Face Assembly of Molecular Phthalocyanine for Superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Anuj Kumar et al.

Summary: This study develops a facile approach to construct dual-atom Fe active sites through self-assembly, resulting in nanorod-like architectures with superior ORR performance. Theoretical studies reveal that the dual-atom Fe species facilitate the cleavage of the O-O bond and the release of OH* intermediates, leading to increased ORR activity.

Covalent triazine framework anchored with atomically dispersed iron as an efficient catalyst for advanced oxygen reduction

Dan Chai et al.

Summary: Developing high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalysts is crucial for the market entry of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). A method involving step-wise polymerization, subsequent pyrolysis, and NH3 activation was explored to construct an efficient Fe modified all-triazine C3N3 framework for the cathodic reaction of fuel cells. The Fe-C3N3-750-NH3 catalyst demonstrates atomic sized Fe species, a dominant four-electron pathway, attractive ORR performance, and good stability compared to commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst.
