Summary: This study investigates the transfer of hormesis between chemical components and personal care product mixtures and identifies a key compound, betaine, affecting hormesis transfer. The study finds that only mixture rays containing at least one hormesis-inducing compound produce hormesis to the freshwater photobacterium Q67. The study also suggests that betaine triggers the quorum sensing pathway, contributing to hormetic effects. This research provides new insights into hormesis and its mixtures, and offers an efficient method to identify potential components that affect hormesis transfer in mixtures.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been a global concern for their harmful effects on aquatic organisms. A study in China analyzed the occurrence and risk of PPCPs in the Jiaozhou Bay watershed, the Yellow Sea, and the East China Sea. The results showed a decrease in detection frequencies and total concentrations of PPCPs from rivers to coastal seas. PPCP mixtures pose medium to high risk to aquatic organisms, with antibiotics and personal care products posing a higher risk to algae and estrogens posing the greatest risk to fish.

Summary: The GSA-qHTS technique for screening toxic factors in complex mixtures suffers from unequal factor levels, leading to asymmetry in the importance of elementary effects. A new method called EFSFL was developed to achieve equal frequency sampling of factor levels, and important factors affecting mixture toxicities were screened using high-throughput microplate toxicity analysis and elementary effect analysis.

Summary: This review examines the interaction between microplastics/nanoplastics and co-existing contaminants, such as organic contaminants, potentially toxic elements, and metal/metal-oxide nanoparticles. The characteristics of the plastics, including polymer type, size, functional groups, and weathering, influence their combined effects with the co-existing contaminants. Mixture toxicity is not only affected by these factors, but also by the type of contaminants, their concentrations, exposure time, dissolved organic matter, and surfactants. Different organisms show different responses to the complex system. Organic contaminants can be biodegraded, which may enhance or alleviate mixture toxicity. Potentially toxic elements can be adsorbed and desorbed under changing environments, further affecting the combined effects. The presence of metal/metal-oxide nanoparticles is more complicated, as some particles may release ion metals, increasing the contaminant composition.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanisms of two organophosphorus pesticides (mevinphos and monocrotophos) in the atmosphere and water using quantum chemical methods. The results show that the degradation pathways involve OH-radical additions and NH-group hydrogen abstractions. The reaction kinetics with NO and O2 in the atmosphere and the degradation rates in water were also evaluated. Additionally, ecotoxicity predictions indicate a reduction in toxicity during degradation.

Summary: Antibiotic pollution in aquatic ecosystems has adverse effects on planktonic organisms, but research on community-level responses is lacking. This review provides an overview of antibiotic pollution worldwide and summarizes recent studies on the responses of planktonic communities. The studies suggest that environmentally relevant concentrations of antibiotics can affect the characteristics and interactions of planktonic organisms, potentially altering the entire ecosystem. The review emphasizes the importance of community analysis and calls for establishing causal relationships between impacts at different scales.

Summary: This study proposes the assessment of pesticide toxicity for different species groups based on both mass and toxicity to evaluate environmental risks. The authors calculated and compared the Total Applied Toxicity (TAT) in Germany between 1995 and 2019, finding a decrease in TAT for terrestrial vertebrates by about 20%, whereas TAT for fishes increased by a factor of three largely due to insecticides. Different species groups showed varying trends in TAT, with pollinators likely being affected by neonicotinoid use restrictions.

Summary: With the widespread use of pesticides, the cocktail effect caused by the coexistence of multiple low-residue pesticides in the environment has become a concern. However, limited information on the modes of action (MOAs) of chemicals hinders the application of concentration addition (CA) models in evaluating and predicting the toxicity of mixtures with similar MOAs. This study characterized the similarity of pesticide MOAs using MEDV-13 descriptors and established methods to test the toxicity of mixtures on the lifespan and reproduction of Caenorhabditis elegans. The results showed consistent toxicity interactions of the mixtures on the nematode's lifespan and reproductive endpoints.

Although the majority of studies did not exceed acceptable between-study variability, and observed mixture doses were usually within two-fold higher or lower than predicted additive doses, there were still relatively few cases of synergistic or antagonistic effects that stood up to scrutiny.

Summary: A global sensitivity analysis based on Sobol indices was used to study aortic growth and remodeling, revealing that 54-80% of the output variability was caused by just three model parameters. The most influential parameters included the tissue's ability to increase collagen production under stress, collagen half-life time, and collagen strain-stiffening under large deformation. This study suggests that using population average values for other parameters in computational studies may be sufficient, and measuring these three influential parameters could lead to more reliable patient-specific predictions of abdominal aortic aneurysm enlargement in clinical practice.
