Towards better lumpfish: Changes in size variation, cataract development, behaviour and sea lice grazing through selective breeding

Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) in the stomach contents of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) sampled from Norwegian fish farms: Relationship between lice grazing and operational conditions

Summary: This paper analyzed the stomach contents of over 20,000 lumpfish from 80 different Norwegian farms to investigate the salmon lice grazing efficacy. Factors such as lumpfish weight, weight of salmonids, salmon lice abundance in the cage, cloud cover, and sea temperature were considered. The results showed that 3.1% of the lumpfish had salmon lice in their stomach contents, with most having few lice and a few having many lice. The study found that lumpfish weight, salmon lice abundance, salmonid weight, and weather conditions influenced salmon lice grazing, while sea temperature did not. The findings contribute to understanding the factors affecting salmon lice grazing by lumpfish and can guide the best practices for using lumpfish as a control measure.

Welfare and survival of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in Norwegian commercial Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) production

Summary: Lumpfish are used in Norwegian salmon farming to prevent and control sea lice. Their use as delousers is advantageous for salmon as it minimizes stress and injuries. However, concerns have been raised about the welfare and survival of lumpfish in salmon farms. This study monitored the welfare and survival of lumpfish in four commercial salmon farms, and found that their welfare decreased over time, mainly due to eye and skin injuries. The mortality rate also increased, with mechanical delousing having the most negative impact on welfare and survival.
