Integrative taxonomy for the traditional coccidians (Chromista: Miozoa: Eimeriidae) from island canaries (Aves: Passeriformes: Fringillidae): Worldwide distribution, morphological and molecular characterization, revaluations and establishment of junior synonyms

Bruno Pereira Berto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify coccidians from island canaries kept in captivity in Brazil. Two subspecies of coccidians, namely Isospora serini and Isospora canaria, were identified through molecular biology and microscopic observation. This study provides morphological and molecular data that ensure the correct identification of the two Isospora spp. from island canaries in future studies worldwide.

Comprehensive molecular characterization of complete mitogenome assemblies of 33 Eimeria isolates infecting domestic chickens

Xuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study genetically characterized the complete mitogenome of 33 chicken Eimeria isolates in China and provided an evolutionary blueprint for these parasites. The analysis revealed the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of these Eimeria species, with cox1 identified as a genetic marker for avian coccidia. These findings contribute valuable resources for population genetic and evolutionary studies of apicomplexan parasites in poultry.

Molecular identification of Isospora coerebae Berto, Flausino, Luz, Ferreira & Lopes, 2010 (Chromista: Miozoa: Eimeriidae) from the bananaquit Coereba flaveola (Linnaeus, 1758) (Passeriformes: Thraupidae: Coerebinae) from Brazil

Carlos Nei Ortuzar-Ferreira et al.

Summary: Isospora coerebae, a coccidian protozoan, was identified from bananaquits in a protected area close to Marambaia Island, Brazil. Its morphological features and genotypic characterization were described using two regions of the mitochondrial COI gene. The results showed that the oocysts of I. coerebae had a typical morphology and were closely related to Isospora spp. from Southeastern Brazil, as well as passerines from North America, Europe, and Asia.

Mitochondrial Gene Diversity and Host Specificity of Isospora in Passerine Birds

Steven V. Kubiski et al.

Summary: Isospora infections are common in both wild and captive passerine species. The severity of the disease varies, making it a concern for institutions housing endangered species. The risk of severe isosporiasis due to mixed-species enclosures and non-host-adapted strains needs further research.

Biodiversity of the Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Conoidasida) in vertebrates: what we know, what we do not know, and what needs to be done

Donald W. Duszynski

Summary: The author has compiled literature on coccidians parasitizing various vertebrates over the past two decades and estimates that there may be a significant number of new apicomplexan species yet to be discovered, suggesting that the current numbers are a significant underestimation of the actual diversity of these parasites.

Annotated checklist of the birds of Brazil by the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee-second edition

Jose Fernando Pacheco et al.

Summary: The updated checklist of birds in Brazil now includes 1971 species, with 11 known only from undocumented records. The list provides details on each species' occurrence status and subspecies information in Brazilian territory, as well as explanations for taxonomic changes, nomenclatural corrections, and other modifications. A total of 90 species have been added while 8 have been removed from the list.
