Analysis of a Stabilised Finite Element Method for Power-Law Fluids

Gabriel R. Barrenechea et al.

Summary: This paper presents a low-order finite element method for the incompressible non-Newtonian flow problem with power-law rheology. The method uses a linear approximation of the velocity field and a constant approximation of the pressure. To compensate for the failure of the inf-sup condition, pressure jumps are added to the formulation, and a divergence-free approximation of the velocity field is included in the discretization. The convergence of the method is proven for a range of power-law index values.

Reduced order modeling for parametrized generalized Newtonian fluid flows

R. Reyes et al.

Summary: This paper presents a parametrized projection-based model reduction approach for time-dependent generalized Newtonian fluids in a computational framework. The authors use an offline-online setting with proper orthogonal and Tucker decompositions, along with finite element method and finite differences for discretization, and variational multiscale approach for stabilization. The reduced method is evaluated through numerical tests.

Aerodynamic shape optimization of an electric aircraft motor surface heat exchanger with conjugate heat transfer constraint

Joshua L. Anibal et al.

Summary: Electrified aircraft require efficient thermal management systems to remove waste heat from electric motors. In this study, a shape optimization method was applied to design a heat sink for an electric technology demonstrator. Analytic tools lack the precision required for detailed shaping and assessment, so first-principles-based models and gradient-based optimization were used to find designs that minimize drag while satisfying the heat load constraint. The study provided insights into the effect of heat load on heat exchanger geometry and the impact of optimized designs on drag reduction, offering potential benefits for other low-heat-rejection heat exchangers.

Numerical study on the use of shear-thinning nanofluids in a micro pin-fin heat sink including vortex generators and changes in pin shapes

I. Aguirre et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the effects of vortex generators and changes in pin shape on flow characteristics in microchannel heat sinks. The results showed that the use of vortex generators significantly increased heat transfer rates, but also increased pressure drops in Newtonian fluids, while reducing pumping costs in shear-thinning fluids.

An adaptive iterative linearised finite element method for implicitly constituted incompressible fluid flow problems and its application to Bingham fluids

Pascal Heid et al.

Summary: In this work, the theory of adaptive finite element analysis for implicitly constituted incompressible fluid flow problems is extended by considering the approximation of nonlinear finite element solutions using an iterative solver. The modified algorithm generates a computable sequence with a weak limit point that serves as a solution to the given problem. The abstract theory is applicable to Bingham fluids with and without the convective term, and the performance of the adaptive iterative linearized finite element algorithm is demonstrated through numerical experiments.

Numerical modeling of laminar and chaotic natural convection flows using a non-residual dynamic VMS formulation

G. Osses et al.

Summary: The performance of a stabilized VMS-type finite element formulation for a non-residual structure in highly convective natural flows is numerically verified in this article. The introduction of two components for the sub-scale velocities allows the resolution of chaotic and highly convective problems without the need for an additional turbulence model. The results confirm the accuracy and robustness of the dynamic formulation in solving highly nonlinear problems with strong thermal coupling.

Numerical study of the effect of blockage ratio in forced convection confined flows of shear-thinning fluids

O. Ruz et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the fluid dynamics and heat transfer of time-dependent flows with shear-thinning behavior over two confined square cylinders in tandem arrangement, showing a transition from laminar to chaotic flow with decreasing power-law index and increasing blockage ratio. Thermal analysis demonstrates an increase in average Nusselt numbers in chaotic flows, and results from the three-dimensional cases confirm those proposed for the two-dimensional case.

Modeling unsteady heat and mass transfer with prediction of mechanical stresses in wood drying

Cristian A. Chavez et al.

Summary: This work presents a predictive transient two-dimensional model describing the evolution of heat, mass and mechanical stresses during wood dehydration inside an experimental drying chamber. The non-linear coupled differential equations of heat, mass and stresses were integrated by the Control Volume Finite Element method using triangular elements with linear interpolation functions for the dependent variables. The mathematical model allows an accurate prediction of industrial information such as drying curves, temperature distribution, moisture content distribution and mass/thermal stresses.
