Monitoring Persistent Coal Fire Using Landsat Time Series Data From 1986 to 2020

Xue Chen et al.

Summary: Coal fires pose significant threats to energy resources, the environment, and human safety. This study proposes a methodology for monitoring persistent coal fires using long-term Landsat thermal images and analyzing their spatiotemporal dynamics. By processing a large number of Landsat images, the surface temperature of the coal field area in China was retrieved. The temperature time series was decomposed and analyzed to identify coal fire areas and trace their dynamics. The proposed methodology was validated through comparisons with field surveys and other algorithms.

Three-dimensional empirical Bayesian kriging for soil PAHs interpolation considering the vertical soil lithology

Ziyang Li et al.

Summary: Contaminated sites often exhibit vertical stratification heterogeneity due to local pollutant accumulation and complex hydrogeological conditions. This study proposes a novel three-dimensional interpolation method considering soil lithology and applies it to the study of PAHs contaminated sites. The results demonstrate the significant influence of soil lithology on pollutant transfer and interpolation accuracy in the vertical direction. The method improves the prediction accuracy of pollutant distribution and provides a innovative approach for depicting the three-dimensional spatial pattern of pollutants.

A spatio-temporal temperature-based thresholding algorithm for underground coal fire detection with satellite thermal infrared and radar remote sensing

Teng Wang et al.

Summary: Coal fire is a global catastrophe that results in resource waste, economic loss, and environmental pollution. This study proposes a spatio-temporal temperature-based thresholding (STTBT) algorithm to accurately detect thermal anomalies induced by coal fires. The detected anomalies are then combined with ground deformation monitoring using the polarimetric persistent scatterer interferometry (PolPSI) technique for effective coal fire detection. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy in detecting thermal anomalies and monitoring ground deformation over coal fire areas compared to conventional methods. The combination of STTBT and PolPSI can serve as a powerful tool for detecting and monitoring underground coal fires.

Spatio-temporal variation and propagation direction of coal fire in Jharia Coalfield, India by satellite-based multi-temporal night-time land surface temperature imaging

Narendra Singh et al.

Summary: In this paper, the spatio-temporal variation and propagation direction of coal fire in the Jharia Coalfield (JCF), India during 2006-2015 were studied using satellite-based night-time land surface temperature (LST) imaging. The study found that the coal fire area increased significantly, primarily propagating along the dip direction of the coal seams with some lateral propagation along the strike direction. Open-cast mining activities and structurally weak planes facilitated the fire propagation.

Three-dimensional-imaging thermal surfaces of coal fires based on UAV thermal infrared data

Zhenlu Shao et al.

Summary: The study investigates a method using drones and thermal infrared technology for quick and accurate locating of coal fire points, which can effectively reduce field work intensity, improve data collection efficiency, and ensure high accuracy at low cost. The research findings suggest that this method can be a useful tool for delineating fire points and other thermal anomaly scenarios.

Accuracy assessment and scale effect investigation of UAV thermography for underground coal fire surface temperature monitoring

Gang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the accuracy of UAV LST images of coal fire areas based on corresponding ground measurements. The results show that most LST anomalies can be detected when the resolution of UAV LST images is better than 7.5 m, with relatively small information loss. Additionally, a resolution of 4 m is required to accurately extract coal fire areas.

Underground Coal Fire Detection and Monitoring Based on Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 Data Sets in Miquan Fire Area, XinJiang

Jinglong Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of remote sensing technologies to improve accuracy in identifying and monitoring underground coal fires in Xinjiang. A multi-source information strength and weakness constraint method (SWCM) is proposed for coal fire identification and analysis, showing the highest accuracy in identification and a significant reduction in error rates. The study also finds a negative correlation between temperature and subsidence rate of coal fire areas, indicating the feasibility of using both factors for identification and monitoring purposes.
