The absence of Emperor Charles V in Castile from 1528 onwards led to the rise of his wife Isabel of Portugal as the head of the government, creating opportunities for the high aristocracy to challenge royal authority. The matrimonial dispute between the IV Count of Uruena and the ladies Maria Enriquez and Maria de la Cueva, lasting for almost five years, resulted in a confrontation between lineages with significant political implications.
The changes that took place in Castile with the absence of Emperor Charles V from 1528 onwards transformed the political space by placing his wife, Isabel of Portugal, at the head of the government. The main representatives of the high aristocracy of this territory took advantage of the empress governances to implement practices that tended to challenge royal authority. The matrimonial dispute between the IV Count of Uruena and the ladies Maria Enriquez and Maria de la Cueva involved, for almost five years, a confrontation between lineages with major political implications that are now being analysed.
