Advancement in biological and mechanical behavior of 3D printed poly lactic acid bone plates using polydopamine coating: Innovation for healthcare

Shrutika Sharma et al.

Summary: In this study, Poly Lactic Acid based bone plates were fabricated using 3D Printing technology and were coated with biocompatible polydopamine. The findings suggest that uncoated bone plates have higher degradation rate and significant reduction in mechanical characteristics, while the coating can slow down the degradation of PLA bone plates and result in complete healing of bone fracture.

Jiyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: Inspired by marine mussels, dopamine with a catechol structure was self-polymerized and deposited on the surface of wood fiber to enhance the interface between wood fiber and polylactic acid. Additionally, silver nanoparticles were attached to the wood fiber surface under the reducibility of polydopamine, providing antibacterial activity against Aspergillus niger.

Current trends, applications, and challenges of coatings on additive manufacturing based biopolymers: A state of art review

Shrutika Sharma et al.

Summary: The healing of bone fractures relies heavily on the compatibility, stability, degradability, functionality, and shelf-life of biomaterials. Metallic biomaterials offer good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, but come with issues like stress shielding and corrosion. Polymer materials are being explored for bone implants due to their lightweight and biocompatible nature, but additive manufacturing has made it possible to create customized implants with minimal waste. However, polymer implants lack in terms of mechanical strength and biological properties.

Accelerated degradation of HAP/PLLA bone scaffold by PGA blending facilitates bioactivity and osteoconductivity

Cijun Shuai et al.

Summary: The addition of PGA into HAP/PLLA scaffold accelerated the degradation process, leading to increased degradation rate and pore formation, which promoted the deposition and growth of bone-like apatite as well as provided a favorable environment for osteoblast adhesion and proliferation. This led to excellent bone defect repair capacity demonstrated by the formation of abundant new bone tissue and blood vessel tissue, ultimately bridging both ends of the defect region after 8 weeks of implantation.

Water resistant fibre/matrix interface in a degradable composite: Synergistic effects of heat treatment and polydopamine coating

Reda M. Felfel et al.

Summary: This study successfully addresses the challenge of retaining a robust fibre-matrix interface in an aqueous environment by applying a polydopamine coating as a coupling agent on phosphate-based glass fibres. The 6-hour coating period was found to strike a balance between fiber strength improvements and degradation caused by the aqueous coating solution. The results demonstrate improved retention of strength and modulus in phosphate-based glass fiber composites, contributing to long-term wet strength properties for bone healing.
