Antibiotic resistance in potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria of fermented foods and human origin from Nigeria

Rachael T. T. Duche et al.

Summary: This study screened potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains for their phenotypic and genotypic antibiotic resistance profiles. The results showed that LAB strains displayed variable susceptibility to different antibiotic classes, with high resistance against cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, quinolones, glycopeptides, and methicillin among beta-lactams. However, they showed high sensitivity to macrolides, sulphonamides, and carbapenems sub-group of beta-lactams. Several antibiotic resistance determinants, such as parC, aac(6?)Ii, ermB, ermC, and tetM, were detected among the lactobacilli strains.

Mobile genetic elements drive the multidrug resistance and spread of Salmonella serotypes along a poultry meat production line

Gabriel I. Kruger et al.

Summary: The presence of mobile genetic elements in Salmonella from a chicken farm poses a potential risk of emerging bacteria in the food industry, contributing to increased pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella isolates from different stages of the production line were identified and serotyped, with Salmonella Infantis being the most predominant serotype. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain diversity and spread in the pipeline were serotype-independent. Salmonella Infantis isolates carried plasmids with resistance genes linked to mobile genetic elements. Antibiotic resistance genotypes were closely matched by resistance phenotypes, particularly for tetracycline, aminoglycosides, and cephalosporins. Overall, contamination in the poultry industry throughout the production line with mobile genetic elements leads to multi-drug resistant bacteria, promoting survival against antimicrobial compounds.

Integrative Conjugative Elements (ICEs) of the SXT/R391 family drive adaptation and evolution in γ-Proteobacteria

Michael P. P. Ryan et al.

Summary: Integrative Conjugative Elements (ICEs) are mosaics that integrate and excise into and from the host genome and can transfer to a specific host range. They encode adaptive functions and have undergone epidemiological and molecular characterization, revealing diversity and function. Comparative analysis shows conservation of key functions and the evolution of adaptive genes through gene acquisition in hotspots and variable regions catalyzed by element-encoded recombinases. SXT/R391 ICEs carry IS elements, transposons, and a mutagenic DNA polymerase PolV, and retain adaptive functions related to specific niches.

Detection of β-Lactamase Resistance and Biofilm Genes in Pseudomonas Species Isolated from Chickens

Hams M. A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas species isolates from chickens showed resistance to most antibiotics, particularly those from the beta-lactamase family. PCR confirmed the correlation between multidrug-resistant isolates and biofilm-related genes, and revealed the potent antibiofilm effect of clove oil against Pseudomonas.

Metagenomic analysis of microbiota and antibiotic resistome in household activated carbon drinking water purifiers

Zhenchao Zhou et al.

Summary: The existing drinking water treatment systems have limited ability to control emerging contaminants, such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Household activated carbon water purifiers (HWPs) are a convenient measure to ensure drinking water quality, but the distribution of ARGs in HWPs has not been reported. This study revealed that the bacterial community diversities in filter water and activated carbon were higher than those in tap water, and the structure of activated carbon played an important role in influencing the bacterial communities and ARG profiles in filter water. Additionally, co-occurrence patterns between ARGs and bacteria were detected, and SourceTracker analyses indicated that activated carbon biofilms were significant contributors of microbes and ARGs in filter water.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance spreads among bacteria through horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Researchers identified potential mobilization elements and other features associated with ARG transfer among bacterial clades, predicting the potential future dissemination of known ARGs.
