Non-oxidative conversion of real low density polyethylene waste into hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials over MgO supported bimetallic Co-Mo catalysts with different total Co-Mo contents

Ahmed M. Haggar et al.

Summary: A series of bimetallic CoMo/MgO catalysts with different total metal contents were prepared and used to convert LDPE waste into hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials. Increasing the CoMo content up to 40 wt% improved the catalytic activity and stability, achieving over 90% H-2 yield. The excessive formation of mixed oxide species enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of Co and Mo particles, leading to improved catalyst performance.

Summary: With the increasing plastic waste and decreasing fossil energy, pyrolysis has emerged as a promising technology for converting plastic waste into fuels and chemicals. This review discusses the properties of common plastics, the pyrolysis mechanism, and the product distribution. Catalysts, such as zeolites, base catalysts, and clays, have shown advantages over thermal cracking. Upgrading and further utilization of the liquid fuels and non-condensable gas co-product are necessary before commercial application. The review emphasizes the importance of techno-economic assessment and aims to inspire research efforts in creating a circular economy.

Investigating the influences of metal-support interaction in Ni-Fe catalysts on the quality of carbon nanomaterials from waste polypropylene

Qingyu Liu et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis-catalysis is a promising method for recycling waste plastics. In this study, the metal-support interaction (MSI) of catalysts was adjusted by introducing different metal components (Ni or/and Fe) and a pre-reduction process. The results showed that NiFe catalysts had moderate MSI and achieved high yields of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). However, after pre-reduction, the MSI was strengthened and the CNMs growth mechanism shifted, resulting in less carbon formation on monometallic Fe or bimetallic NiFe catalysts.

Summary: In this study, carbon nanotubes were produced from post-consumer mixed waste plastics using a pyrolysis-catalysis process, with the Ni-Fe/MCM41 catalyst displaying the highest catalytic activity. The order of catalytic activity was related to differences in catalyst pore volume and catalyst reducibility, with the formation of a Ni-Fe alloy suggested to be crucial for the promotion of carbon nanotube formation. By-product production of hydrogen at large quantities could be utilized as process fuel.

Decoupling the size and support/metal loadings effect of Ni/SiO2 catalysts for CO2 methanation

Kang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of nickel particle size on CO2 methanation and demonstrates that small nickel nanoparticles supported on SiO2 can significantly enhance catalytic performance. In situ DRIFTS results suggest that small Ni particles favor the formation of key intermediates and thus promote the CO2 methanation reaction. These findings provide valuable insights for designing effective CO2 methanation catalysts by tuning the size of Ni nanoparticles.

Pyrolysis of plastic wastes in a fountain confined conical spouted bed reactor: Determination of stable operating conditions

Santiago Orozco et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for stable operation in the pyrolysis of waste plastics, focusing on improving gas-solid contact. The research results indicate that polymers with low decomposition temperatures or high branching degrees require lower operating temperatures, and increasing the bed mass to plastic feed rate ratio and spouting velocity can reduce the temperature needed to avoid defluidization. Additionally, the use of a catalyst can effectively lower the temperature required for stable operation by reducing the activation energy of cracking reactions.
