New trends in sugarcane fertilization: Implications for NH3 volatilization, N2O emissions and crop yields

Bruna G. Oliveira et al.

Summary: The use of an organo-mineral formulation reduced NH3 losses and increased N2O emissions compared to regular solid fertilizer, while the addition of a nitrification inhibitor effectively mitigated N2O emissions.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and fungal denitrifier diversity are associated with N2O production in tropical soils

Kesia Silva Lourenco et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different concentrations of organic residue on the dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and fungal denitrifiers in tropical soils cultivated with sugarcane. The results showed that the combination of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and organic residue increased the abundance of AOB and fungal denitrifiers and N2O emissions, but did not affect their diversity and structure.

Sustainability in Sugarcane Supply Chain in Brazil: Issues and Way Forward

Raffaella Rossetto et al.

Summary: This study reviews the main advances in the agricultural production of sugarcane in Brazil over the past decade, highlighting the importance of increased productivity and sustainability. The focus on sugarcane production is driven by the need to replace fossil fuels with ethanol, leading to greater concerns about global warming, climate change, and sustainability in agriculture. Efforts have been made to implement conservationist practices, recycle residues, preserve biodiversity, deliver environmental services, adopt circular economy principles, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Improvements in fertilizer recommendations, sugarcane breeding programs, replanting methods, soil compaction solutions, and public policies have the potential to contribute to a renewed and more sustainable sugarcane industry.

Soil pH does not interfere with nitrification inhibitor efficiency for reducing N2O emissions from soils treated with concentrated vinasse and urea

Bruna G. Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of a potential nitrification inhibitor in reducing nitrous oxide emissions from the joint application of concentrated vinasse and urea in soils with different pH values. The results showed that soil pH had a significant impact on N2O emissions, but had little effect on the efficiency of the nitrification inhibitor.

Does biochar improve all soil ecosystem services?

Humberto Blanco-Canqui

Summary: Biochar has the potential to improve multiple soil ecosystem services, such as reducing N2O emissions, nitrate leaching, and runoff, while increasing soil microbial biomass, plant available water, and crop yields. However, the effectiveness of biochar on these services depends on various factors such as feedstock, pyrolysis temperature, and soil properties. Further long-term field studies are needed to fully understand the optimal application levels and potential tradeoffs of biochar in different soil and climatic conditions.

Effects of biochar application on soil nitrogen transformation, microbial functional genes, enzyme activity, and plant nitrogen uptake: A meta-analysis of field studies

Leiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: Biochar application can significantly enhance soil nitrogen cycling processes under field conditions, increasing soil nitrogen availability and plant productivity, while potentially leading to increased nitrogen losses with long-term use. Future studies are needed to further investigate the effects of long-term biochar application on soil nitrogen cycle and microbial mechanisms.

Implications of regional N2O-N emission factors on sugarcane ethanol emissions and granted decarbonization certificates

Joao Luis Nunes Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study examined the impacts of N fertilizers on GHG emissions from sugarcane ethanol production. It compared emissions calculated using Tier 1 and Tier 2 approaches, showing that Tier 2 results in lower emissions. The addition of nitrification inhibitors and improvements in vinasse/fertilizer management further reduce emissions, contributing to the potential earning of decarbonization certificates for ethanol producers.

Effects of biochar on N2O emission in denitrification pathway from paddy soil: A drying incubation study

Han Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of biochar made from different feedstocks and pyrolysis temperatures on N2O emissions from paddy soil during a drying process. Results showed varying effects of different biochar types on N2O emissions, highlighting the need for caution when considering biochar application to mitigate N2O emissions.

A meta-analysis of projected global food demand and population at risk of hunger for the period 2010-2050

Michiel van Dijk et al.

Summary: Based on a review of 57 global food security projection and quantitative scenario studies published in the past two decades, it is projected that the total global food demand will increase by 35% to 56% by 2050, while the population at risk of hunger is expected to change by -91% to +8%. Both ranges are significantly lower than previous projections.
