Isoflurane inhibition of endocytosis is an anesthetic mechanism of action

Sangwook Jung et al.

Summary: The mechanisms of volatile anesthetic action, including inhibition of mitochondrial complex I and depression of presynaptic excitatory signaling, remain poorly understood. This study explored the link between these effects by examining the effects of isoflurane on presynaptic vesicle cycling and ATP levels in cultured neurons. The findings suggest that inhibition of mitochondrial complex I is a primary mechanism for the action of volatile anesthetics.

Selective inhibition of gamma aminobutyric acid release from mouse hippocampal interneurone subtypes by the volatile anaesthetic isoflurane

Summary: The study reveals that isoflurane inhibits synaptic vesicle exocytosis from hippocampal glutamatergic neurones and GABAergic interneurones in a cell-type-specific manner depending on their expression of voltage-gated sodium channel subtypes.
