Interactive effects of rainfall intensity, kinetic energy and antecedent soil moisture regime on splash erosion in the Ultisol region of South China

Lun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of splash erosion and quantified the interactive effects of multiple factors on splash erosion by simulating rainfall and using a modified splash pan. The results showed that rainfall intensity and kinetic energy significantly influenced splash erosion, and the splash erosion rates were lower in dry conditions compared to wet conditions after runoff occurred. Moreover, rainfall kinetic energy and antecedent soil moisture were dominant factors before runoff occurrence, while rainfall intensity, kinetic energy, and their interactions were the main factors after runoff occurrence.

Roles of soil surface roughness in surface-subsurface flow regulation and sediment sorting

Yichun Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, long-duration rainfall simulations were conducted to investigate the effect of soil surface roughness (SSR) on water erosion. The results showed that the rough surface generated less surface flow and more subsurface flow, accelerating the initial flow response and erosion stage advancement. SSR had a significant reduction effect on sediment yield under light rain or in the sheet erosion stage, but the effect was limited in stronger rainfall or rill erosion stage. Differences in soil crusts and rill network distribution were the main factors. Stream power was identified as the best hydraulic parameter for predicting soil loss rate. The investigation of particle size distribution of the eroded sediment revealed the selective and degrading effects of SSR on sediment particles.

Particle size characteristics of sediment by sheet erosion and their responses to related parameters on a Loess hillslope: a plot-scale study

Qingwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Particle size distribution (PSD) of sediment is influenced by various factors such as rainfall intensity and slope gradient. An increase in rainfall intensity and slope gradient leads to a decrease in smaller particles and an increase in larger particles. Clay-sized particles are more likely to be transported as aggregates, while silt-sized particles are more likely to be transported individually. The effective PSDs of sediment can be predicted using parameters such as rainfall intensity, stream power, and unit stream power.

Predicting soil organic carbon movement and concentration using a soil erosion and Landscape Evolution Model

G. R. Hancock et al.

Summary: Explicit relationships and numerical models linking landscape and topographic characteristics with soil organic carbon (SOC) processes are necessary. The Landscape Evolution Model (LEM) calibrated in this study accurately predicts erosion and deposition, with erosion rates comparable to independent measurements. The majority of SOC is found to be transported in the top 2 cm of soil, and disturbance to the hillslope can significantly increase SOC export.

Effects of ryegrass canopy and roots on the distribution characteristics of eroded sediment particles during heavy rainfall events on steep loess-cinnamon slopes in Zhangjiakou, China

Xiaona Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that ryegrass canopies help reduce runoff, while ryegrass roots primarily contribute to erosion reduction. As rainfall duration increases, smaller particles increase in eroded sediment on grass slopes, while larger particles decrease. The results suggest that grass cover can prevent loss of small particles in topsoil and guide comprehensive soil erosion control.

Storage of soil carbon as particulate and mineral associated organic matter in irrigated woody perennial crops

Andrew J. Midwood et al.

Summary: This study shows that annual crops like cereals, cotton, maize, and non-woody horticultural crops can lead to a decrease in soil carbon stocks, while cultivation of irrigated, woody perennial crops results in an accumulation of soil carbon. After decades of woody crop production, the average soil carbon concentration doubled compared to native sites.

The effects of previous crop residue, sowing direction and slope length on phosphorus losses from eroded sediments under no-tillage

Fabricio Tondello Barbosa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that no-tillage combined with soil surface cover can effectively reduce soil and nutrient losses caused by water erosion. The direction of sowing and slope length can affect this effectiveness, highlighting the need for consideration of crop residue failure risk and the subsequent increase in soil and sedimentary phosphorus losses in agricultural and environmental management.

Erosion effects on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics on cultivated slopes: A meta-analysis

Maire Holz et al.

Summary: The redistribution of soil carbon and nitrogen due to erosion is influenced by factors like slope gradient and soil texture, leading to enrichment of these elements in eroded sediments. Organic matter and plant nutrients are selectively moved during erosion, causing changes in soil fertility and dynamics in different slope positions. This in turn increases the spatial variability of carbon and nitrogen along the slope.

The impact of land use and rainfall patterns on the soil loss of the hillslope

Xianmeng Meng et al.

Summary: The experiment explored the impact of rainfall patterns and land use types on soil erosion in Zhangjiachong watershed, showing that hedgerows and terraces have different effects on soil loss under various rainfall patterns. The study also found that the coefficients of variation for soil erosion modulus varied under different rainfall patterns.
