Photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms in different water matrices: The effect of physicochemical parameters on the treatment outcome

Maria Bartolomeu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) in real wastewater contexts for microbial inactivation. The results showed that PDI is an effective and promising disinfection method with a bacterial reduction of >3.0 log CFU/mL within the first hour of treatment. However, the physicochemical composition of water matrices should be considered as it can affect PDI efficacy, especially the pH, with acidic conditions showing better PDI performance.

In Vitro Photoinactivation of Fusarium oxysporum Conidia with Light-Activated Ammonium Phthalocyanines

Sara R. D. Gamelas et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is an innovative therapeutic approach that can effectively inactivate microbial forms without harming host tissues or causing resistance. This study evaluates the antifungal/sporicidal activity of tetra- and octasubstituted phthalocyanine dyes with ammonium groups. Both photosensitizers tested showed high efficiency in inactivating conidia, with the tetrasubstituted dye being the most effective. These phthalocyanines have the potential to be potent antifungal drugs due to their low concentrations and moderate energy doses required for inactivation.

Organic Photo-antimicrobials: Principles, Molecule Design, and Applications

Bei Ran et al.

Summary: The use of photo-antimicrobials (PAMs) in phototherapy (PT) offers a new approach to combat multi-drug-resistant pathogens. By reacting with cell membranes, PAMs can effectively eradicate various pathogens, making them suitable for treating local infections, wound dressings, and biofilm removal from medical devices. Further development of organic photo-antimicrobials (OPAMs) is crucial for addressing the general challenges in microbial infections, especially during the global COVID-19 epidemic.
