Advances in forward osmosis (FO) technology for enhanced efficiency and output: A critical review

Dsilva Winfred Rufuss et al.

Summary: Forward osmosis (FO) technology has been introduced as a complementary technology to conventional reverse osmosis (RO) for water purification, addressing the drawbacks of high salinity and susceptibility to fouling. Important parameters in FO operation include water flux, energy consumption, fouling, draw solution type, and membrane type. Various methods to increase water flux and recovery, and to mitigate membrane fouling and concentration polarization have been developed.

A stepwise approach to predict the performance of forward osmosis operation: Effect of temperature and flow direction

Woo-Ju Kim et al.

Summary: The objective of this research was to develop a temperature-dependent prediction model for scale-up of forward osmosis. The study found that the stepwise model provided improved agreement with experimental measurements compared to the lumped parameter model. The stepwise model was also found to be able to accommodate parameter variations along the channel length and predicted higher water flux in the co-current flow mode.

Prediction of forward osmosis membrane engineering factors using artificial intelligence approach

Sung Ju Im et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an AI-based model for early control and decision-making in the forward osmosis (FO) membrane system. The results show that the artificial neural networks model is extremely suitable for predicting water flux, membrane fouling, and removal efficiencies. Organic matters, sodium ion, and calcium ion concentrations play a vital role in all predictions. The best model architecture suggests optimal hidden layers (2-4 layers) and neurons (10-15 neurons).

Woo-Ju Kim et al.

Summary: This research developed a temperature-dependent prediction model for forward osmosis, with results showing that the stepwise model provided more accurate predictions of water and salt flux compared to a lumped parameter model, especially in the temperature range of 15℃ to 35℃. The study also highlighted the importance of accommodating parameter variations along the channel length.

Sugarcane juice concentration using a novel aquaporin hollow fiber forward osmosis membrane

Aanisha Akhtar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of a commercially available HFFO membrane for concentrating sugarcane juice with appropriate UF pretreatment technique. It evaluated the effects of different parameters on water and reverse solute flux, and proposed improvements. Results showed that the specific reverse solute flux was lower in counter-current mode compared to co-current mode, which led to increased water flux. Membrane fouling was observed with raw sugarcane juice causing severe fouling that required additional treatment.

Environmental sustainability of forward osmosis: The role of draw solute and its management

Mattia Giagnorio et al.

Summary: Studies show that the use of thermolytic, organic, and fertilizer-based draw solutes in FO systems would lead to higher impacts compared to more accessible inorganic compounds. The draw osmotic pressure in FO affects the design of the filtration system and its environmental sustainability. When FO is combined with pressure-driven membrane processes, the environmental sustainability depends on balancing the energy required for regeneration and draw solution management.
