Summary: CO2 capture and storage technology, particularly CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2 EOR), has the potential to significantly contribute to achieving net zero emissions. In this study, the unique physical properties of gas microbubbles (MBs) were utilized to improve pore utilization efficiency in sand samples under reservoir conditions. The results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) testing revealed that MB injection resulted in a more significant left shift of the transverse relaxation time, allowing CO2 to occupy a wider range of large pore spaces. Additionally, the storage efficiency and gas storage potential were significantly enhanced within low-permeability sand when injected with MBs.

Summary: The feasibility of N2 alternating CO2 injection for improving CO2 storage and oil production was investigated through laboratory experiments and numerical simulation. The results showed that the N2 alternating CO2 flooding had 2.1% lower CO2 storage factor and 7.1% lower enhanced oil recovery compared to continuous CO2 injection. However, the larger the N2 slug volume, the lower the EOR and CO2 storage factor, due to the reduction of CO2 concentration in the gas phase and CO2 solubility in oil and water. Nevertheless, the N2 slugs significantly reduced mobility differences between flowing zones, resulting in a 1.78 times larger gas swept area and a 44% higher cumulative oil production compared to continuous CO2 injection. Moreover, the optimized N2 alternating CO2 injection scheme achieved 19.6% more CO2 storage than continuous CO2 flooding at a field scale. This study provides valuable experimental and theoretical support for improving CO2 storage and oil production in an oil reservoir.

Summary: CO2 storage is an important technique for achieving carbon peak and carbon neutralization, and depleted gas reservoirs are potential candidates for geological CO2 storage. High water-bearing wells in volcanic depleted gas reservoirs can be selected for CO2 storage. The gas-water distribution characteristics of the gas reservoir after CO2 injection are evaluated and the CO2 injection timing and volume are optimized. Typical wells have been selected for CO2 storage based on the research results.

Summary: This paper proposes an integrated decision-making method for solving the site selection problem of CO2 geological storage, based on multi-objective optimization by ratio analysis plus the full multiplicative form (MULTIMOORA) method and prioritized aggregation operators in Pythagorean fuzzy environment. The method can evaluate the prioritization of CO2 geological storage candidate sites and provide decision support. The effectiveness and robustness of the method are verified through a comparative analysis of existing methods.

Summary: Many countries have committed to reducing CO2 emissions in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, and Spain, with its diverse geological setting, has the potential for high geochemical carbon dioxide removal (CDR). However, there is currently a lack of pilot schemes and large-scale strategies for CDR implementation in Spain, due to gaps in knowledge and lack of attention from regulatory bodies. This study identifies possible materials, locations, and strategies for future geochemical CDR research and implementation in Spain, highlighting the potential for kilotonne to million tonne scale CDR options.

Summary: Injecting surfactants through cEOR has attracted significant attention in improving oil recovery by altering fluid/rock and/or fluid/fluid interaction. The reduction in interfacial tension (IFT) by adsorption of surfactants on the oil/water interface plays a crucial role in mobilizing trapped oil in porous media. However, the toxicity, high cost, and environmental issues associated with chemical surfactants have led to the search for natural alternatives. This study provides a comprehensive overview of natural surfactant types and their performance in EOR, including the impact of fabrication methods, nanoparticle addition, and salinity. It was found that natural surfactants synthesized from seed oil showed superior performance compared to those extracted from other plant parts, achieving IFT reduction of up to 98% and improving ultimate oil recovery by 2-40% of the original oil in place (OOIP).

Summary: Under the background of dual-carbon, using shale gas reservoirs for CO2 injection and storage is strategically significant. A fully coupled model is established in this paper to comprehensively consider the complex characteristics of shale reservoirs for accurate reservoir simulation of CO2 injection and storage. The model's reliability and practicability are verified, and various factors affecting the production curve and CO2 storage characteristics are analyzed. The results show that the model is reliable and practical for studying enhanced shale gas recovery and CO2 storage.

Summary: Global CO2 emissions for 2022 increased by 1.5% relative to 2021 (+7.9% and +2.0% relative to 2020 and 2019, respectively), reaching 36.1 GtCO(2). These 2022 emissions consumed 13%-36% of the remaining carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C, suggesting permissible emissions could be depleted within 2-7 years (67% likelihood).

Summary: In recent years, the use of smart water and surfactants to enhance oil recovery in carbonate reservoirs has gained significant attention. This study investigated the impact of various salts in smart water and two surfactants (CTAB and SDS) on wettability alteration and interfacial tension (IFT) in carbonate rock. Micromodel and core flooding tests were conducted to evaluate the oil recovery under different injection schemes. The results showed that CTAB or SDS in seawater (SW) had a stronger contact angle reduction effect compared to smart water. Increasing the concentration of SO42- and removing Na+ from SW resulted in more water-wet states. Divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+) showed better performance in improving oil recovery. The combination of SW and surfactants had a more positive effect on boosting oil recovery compared to smart water flooding. The first-order injection scheme was more effective than the second-order injection scheme. SW + CTAB and SW + SDS in tertiary injection increased the oil recovery to about 59% and 57%, respectively, with CTAB being more effective than SDS.

Summary: The benefits of injecting CO2 into a gas-condensate reservoir include reducing emissions and increasing hydrocarbon production. Investing in low risk projects on already producing natural gas fields is feasible. In late production periods, the process can be carbon-negative, making the enhanced gas recovery scheme advantageous as a preliminary step before converting the reservoir to a CO2 storage facility.
