PoeticAR: Reviving Traditional Poetry of the Heritage Site of Jichang Garden via Augmented Reality

Jin Tian et al.

Summary: As a renowned classical garden in China, Jichang Garden has inspired countless poets throughout its centuries-long history, resulting in a valuable collection of poems that form an important part of its intangible cultural heritage. However, tourists often focus on the tangible natural scenery and historical architecture while neglecting the intangible cultural heritage of poetry. Through interviews and user studies, we developed PoeticAR, an augmented reality prototype that allows tourists to simultaneously enjoy the physical scenery and poetry, enhancing their cultural and aesthetic experience in Jichang Garden and increasing awareness of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Cultural Heritage sites.

Perspective-Taking of Non-Player Characters in Prosocial Virtual Reality Games: Effects on Closeness, Empathy, and Game Immersion

Jeffrey C. F. Ho et al.

Summary: The study found that perspective-taking of NPCs indirectly enhances players' immersion in the game through closeness with the destroyed robot and empathy towards the protected robots. This indirect effect is moderated by players' weekly exposure to video games, suggesting that VR-based perspective-taking of NPCs can enhance gameplay experiences in prosocial VR games.

Narrative medical visualization to communicate disease data

Monique Meuschke et al.

Summary: This paper examines the combination of narrative techniques and medical visualizations to present data-driven stories about diseases to a general audience. It demonstrates how narrative techniques can aid visual communication and enhance comprehension of medical data by applying a template for creating disease stories and integrating interactive 3D anatomical models into the narrative. The findings from a study involving 90 participants indicate that a well-designed narrative structure, consistent involvement of a specific patient, high-quality visualizations, and user-friendly interactions are critical for creating understandable and memorable disease stories.

Humane Visual AI: Telling the Stories Behind a Medical Condition

Wonyoung So et al.

Summary: The article discusses the use of deep-learning framework to quantify psychological aspects of medical conditions through mining Reddit posts, and a probabilistic approach to quantify social aspects through mining prescription data. Finally, a narrative-style Martini Glass visualization is used to visually communicate the different aspects of medical conditions, with the study showing that this type of visualization can influence participants' opinions.

Bridging psychological distance: The impact of immersive media on distant and proximal environmental issues

Priska Breves et al.

Summary: This experimental study suggests that immersive media, such as omnidirectional 360 degrees videos, can help decrease individuals' psychological distance from environmental issues, increase personal relevance, perceived risk severity, and behavioral intentions concerning environmental issues. Higher levels of technological immersiveness may be especially effective in communicating distant risks and promoting pro-environmental intentions by simulating direct experiences.
