Dynamic fracture of glass fiber-reinforced ductile polymer matrix composites and loading rate effect

Jinling Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic fracture of S-2 glass fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites (FRPMCs) and proposed a new technique to improve the matrix ductility. The composite material was characterized by micro-CT scanning and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mechanical properties were accurately quantified through dynamic experiments and in-situ radiography. Furthermore, the effects of loading rates on fracture behaviors were studied through quasi-static experiments and postfracture analysis.

Adiabatic heating and damage onset in a pultruded glass fiber reinforced composite under compressive loading at different strain rates

Nazanin Pournoori et al.

Summary: Compression tests were conducted to investigate damage onset and adiabatic heating of a pultruded GFRP composite at different strain rates, revealing significant strain rate effects. Optical and IR imaging techniques provided detailed data, while SEM analysis identified micro-scale crack paths, contributing to more precise numerical predictions and design considerations.

Real-time damage characterization for GFRCs using high-speed synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging

Jinling Gao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the application of high-speed X-ray PCI technology in characterizing dynamic damage properties of GFRCs, enabling characterization of crack initiation within nanoseconds and tracking of crack geometry changes. Additionally, it can identify microscopic damage features at sub-10-micron resolution, revealing the essence of macro-scale structural failure of composites.
