The effects of a sensory stimulation intervention on psychosocial and clinical outcomes of critically ill patients and their families: A randomised controlled trial

Surui Liang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a sensory stimulation intervention on intensive care unit patients' psychosocial, clinical, and family outcomes. The results showed that patients and family caregivers who received the sensory stimulation intervention had better psychological well-being and higher satisfaction with care. This study has important clinical significance and practical value.

Original Development and Validation of a Predictive Score for Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation After Cardiac Surgery

Ludovic Michaud et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) after scheduled cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Logistic regression analysis identified five variables independently associated with PMV. The study authors developed a score to predict PMV and validated it in a separate cohort.

Comparative effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for preventing delirium in critically ill adults: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Ting-Jhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different non-pharmacological interventions on the incidence and duration of delirium in intensive care units through network meta-analysis. The results showed that a multicomponent strategy was the most effective intervention in reducing delirium incidence, and early mobilization and family participation also had a significant effect on reducing delirium incidence.

Relative survival after aortic valve surgery in patients with bicuspid aortic valves

Natalie Glaser et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze long-term survival in patients with Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV) who underwent aortic valve surgery. Results showed that the survival of BAV patients following surgery was excellent and similar to the general population, with slightly lower survival rates for women compared to men. These findings suggest that the timing of surgery according to current guidelines is appropriate and provide valuable information about the natural history of BAV in patients post-aortic valve surgery.

Associations between caregiver-detected delirium and symptoms of depression and anxiety in family caregivers of critically ill patients: a cross-sectional study

Brianna K. Rosgen et al.

Summary: Family caregivers detecting delirium in critically ill patients are associated with increased depression and anxiety symptoms. Delirium score is correlated with severity of anxiety symptoms in family caregivers, but not depression symptoms.

Current status and etiology of valvular heart disease in China: a population-based survey

Ying Yang et al.

Summary: The epidemiology of valvular heart disease (VHD) in China has been studied through a national survey, revealing a weighted prevalence of 3.8% and an estimated 25 million patients in the country. VHD prevalence increases with age, with higher rates in those with hypertension or chronic kidney disease. Rheumatic heart disease remains the major cause of VHD, but there is a significant increase in degenerative heart disease, with age and hypertension being important markers of VHD.

The effect of foot reflexology massage on delirium and sleep quality following cardiac surgery: A randomized clinical trial

Ahmad Fazlollah et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of foot reflexology massage on delirium and sleep quality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The results showed that foot reflexology did not significantly reduce delirium or improve sleep quality, but did decrease pain intensity. Further research on the pathology and predictive models of delirium is needed for appropriate interventions.

Global epidemiology of valvular heart disease

Sean Coffey et al.

Summary: Valvular heart disease (VHD) is a major cause of physical function loss, decreased quality of life, and shortened longevity. Rheumatic heart disease remains the most common manifestation of VHD globally, while calcific aortic stenosis and degenerative mitral valve disease are also significant. Despite improvements in mortality related to rheumatic heart disease, deaths from calcific aortic stenosis have increased over the past 20 years.
