Effects of various soil water potential thresholds for drip irrigation on soil salinity, seed cotton yield and water productivity of cotton in northwest China

Chao Xiao et al.

Summary: As a vital cotton producing region, the arid and semi-arid region of northwest China has faced increasing scarcity of water resources and the need for more efficient irrigation methods. A two-year field experiment in Northern Xinjiang explored the effects of different soil water potential thresholds for drip irrigation on soil salinity, cotton growth, and seed cotton yield. The results showed that lower soil water potential thresholds reduced soil moisture, but also decreased soil salinity and controlled it below the root zone. A soil water potential threshold of -20 kPa was recommended for drip-irrigated cotton in Northern Xinjiang.

In-situ retention of nitrogen, phosphorus in agricultural drainage and soil nutrients by biochar at different temperatures and the effects on soil microbial response

Yufei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that biochar with different temperatures can effectively reduce pollutants in agricultural runoff, and higher-temperature biochar has better efficacy. Additionally, biochar can significantly enhance soil fertility by increasing organic matter content, nutrient availability, and regulating pH. It can also improve soil enzyme activity and affect microbial community composition, promoting nutrient cycling. Therefore, biochar has the potential to be an effective approach for nutrient retention and recycling, mitigating agricultural non-point source pollution, and enhancing soil fertility.

Summary: This study conducted a field experiment to investigate the effectiveness of biochar in improving the survival rate of Panax notoginseng under continuous cropping. The results showed that biochar significantly increased the survival rate of PN by improving soil properties and increasing microbial diversity. The application of biochar also led to an increase in soil pH, available phosphorus and potassium, organic matter content, and a decrease in NH4+-N and allelochemicals vanillic acid and syringic acid contents. Soil pH, available phosphorus and potassium, and microbial diversity were positively correlated with PN survival rate, while NH4+-N content was negatively correlated.

Mechanism of snowmelt infiltration coupled with salt transport in soil amended with carbon-based materials in seasonally frozen areas

Summary: A two-year field study was conducted in a seasonally frozen area of northern China to investigate the influence of freeze-thaw cycles on soil salt migration. The results showed that biochar and corn stover could regulate soil pore structure and enhance snowmelt water infiltration, leading to increased soil moisture content. Biochar with abundant functional groups increased cation exchange capacity and promoted salt ion migration, while corn stover acted as a barrier to hinder salt return. Among all the treatments, the combined treatment had the lowest synergistic transport ability of soil salt and water.

Biochar fertilization effects on soil bacterial community and soil phosphorus forms depends on the application rate

Xue Li et al.

Summary: Biochar plays a crucial role in the distribution and forms of soil phosphorus by impacting soil biochemical characteristics and microbial community. This study found that medium application rates of biochar led to the highest increase in bacterial diversity and abundances, as well as the retention of phosphorus forms in bacterial cells. At low application rates, the abundance of nitrogen-fixing and phosphorus solubilizing and mineralizing bacteria increased. However, at high application rates, the proportion of phosphorus retained in bacterial cells decreased while more stable forms of phosphorus steadily increased.
