Impact of random and periodic surface roughness on P- and L-band radiometry

Xiaoji Shen et al.

Summary: L-band passive microwave remote sensing is a reliable technique for global soil moisture monitoring, but soil roughness complicates the relationship between brightness temperature and soil moisture. P-band with longer wavelength shows less impact from soil roughness compared to L-band, improving brightness temperature simulation and soil moisture retrieval accuracy.

Evaluation of the tau-omega model over bare and wheat-covered flat and periodic soil surfaces at P- and L-band

Xiaoji Shen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the tau-omega model at P-band (0.75 GHz) through an experiment, and demonstrated the potential of P-band radiometers to accurately measure soil moisture and minimize vegetation impact. The results showed that P-band had a comparable RMSE across different soil surface conditions, indicating its suitability for global soil moisture monitoring.

Soil Moisture Retrieval Depth of P- and L-Band Radiometry: Predictions and Observations

Xiaoji Shen et al.

Summary: This study estimated the moisture retrieval depth at different wavelengths and found that P-band has the potential to retrieve soil moisture over a deeper layer compared to L-band, while maintaining the same correlation. Experimental results showed an increasing trend of moisture retrieval depth with increasing wavelength, potentially achieving a depth greater than 10 cm for P-band below 0.5 GHz. The model predictions also emphasized that the retrieval depth is not only dependent on soil moisture content and observation frequency, but also on the moisture gradient of the profile.
