Multinuclear metal catalysts in ring-opening polymerization of e caprolactone and lactide: Cooperative and electronic effects between metal centers

Ling-Jo Wu et al.

Summary: Multinuclear metal complexes can enhance the catalytic activity of ROP catalysts, but the distance between catalytic metal centers and the resonance of ligands play important roles in the catalytic reaction. This review focuses on recent studies of multinuclear metal catalysts in ROP and compares their catalytic activity with mononuclear metal catalysts.

Binuclear ketodiiminate magnesium complexes for the ROP of cyclic L-Lactide and ε-Caprolactone

Eduard Gloeckler et al.

Summary: Compared to linear and branched polyesters, the exploration of cyclic polyesters has been limited. In this study, ketodiiminate magnesium complexes were synthesized and used as catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic polylactide and cyclic polycaprolactone under mild reaction conditions. Catalyst 2 exhibited excellent reactivity and selectivity.

Isoselective mechanism for asymmetric kinetic resolution polymerization of rac-lactide catalyzed by chiral tridentate bis(oxazolinylphenyl)amido ligand supported zinc complexes

Zengping Peng et al.

Summary: Zinc complexes supported by chiral tridentate bis(oxazolinylphenyl)amido ligands were synthesized and used for the efficient asymmetric kinetic resolution polymerization of rac-lactide, resulting in isotactic polylactide with stereogradient microstructure and narrow dispersity. The combination of enantiomorphic site control and chain-end control is responsible for the stereocontrol mechanism during the polymerization process.

Cooperative Effect in Binuclear Zinc Catalysts in the ROP of Lactide

Swarup Ghosh et al.

Summary: In this study, four binuclear monomeric compounds and two dimeric ketodiiminate zinc alkyl complexes were synthesized and their structures were determined through spectroscopic characterization and crystal structure analysis. It was found that the ethyl-substituted compounds exhibited higher catalytic activity and faster reaction rates compared to the methyl-substituted ones, and the reaction rate was dependent on both the monomer and the catalyst concentration. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the binuclear mechanism was favored in the MeO-substituted complexes, indicating a beneficial cooperative effect between the adjacent zinc atoms.

Guanidinate Zn(II) Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for Lactide Homo- and Copolymerization under Industrially Relevant Conditions

Ilaria D'Auria et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is currently the most commercially relevant biodegradable polymer, and the use of zinc(II) catalysts in the ROP of L-lactide under high temperature conditions has shown stability, high yield, and reduced monomer racemization, making it suitable for industrial applications. Additionally, these catalysts can copolymerize L-lactide with e-caprolactone to produce either block or random copolymers.
