Enhance the anchoring and catalytic performance of lithium-sulfur batteries for lithium polysulfide by predicted TiS2 monolayer

Wenyang Zhao et al.

Summary: A TiS2 monolayer was designed as the anchoring material for lithium-sulfur batteries to address the issues encountered. The TiS2 monolayer effectively adsorbs lithium polysulfide, maintains excellent battery activity, and has lower decomposition barrier and ion migration barrier, making it a promising anchoring material.

Will lithium-sulfur batteries be the next beyond-lithium ion batteries and even much better?

Jianguo Sun et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronic devices, electric vehicles, and stationary energy storage, but there is a need for beyond lithium-ion batteries with higher energy density and lower cost. Lithium-sulfur batteries have been extensively pursued due to their high energy density, but poor cyclability remains a major challenge. This perspective examines the challenges and opportunities faced by lithium-sulfur batteries and proposes approaches at different levels to transform them into leading champions in the pursuit of beyond lithium-ion batteries. Suggestions for near-future research directions for both liquid and solid state lithium-sulfur batteries are also provided.

First-Principle study of lithium polysulfide adsorption on heteroatom doped graphitic carbon nitride for Lithium-Sulfur batteries

Nattida Yamsang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (g-C3N4) and its heteroatoms as chemical anchoring materials for suppressing the dissolution of intermediate lithium polysulfide species (LiPSs) into the liquid electrolyte in lithium-sulfur batteries. The introduction of dopant atoms such as B and P on g-C3N4 is found to stabilize LiPSs through lithium bond interaction, providing optimum adsorption energies for LSBs anchoring. However, O- and S-doped g-C3N4 show weaker adsorption, and electron transfers and van der Waals interactions play significant roles in LiPSs adsorption. Overall, this research offers fundamental insights into surface tuning of g-C3N4 by doping heteroatoms to reduce the shuttle effect, benefiting the development of advanced LSBs.

Engineering the morphology/porosity of oxygen-doped carbon for sulfur host as lithium-sulfur batteries

Limin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study designed carbon materials with rational morphology and pore structures to enhance the loading and adsorption capacity of sulfur, thereby improving the energy storage performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. Through rational design, variations in sulfur immobilization were successfully achieved, leading to increased cycling stability. The results show that mesopores in carbon exhibit more fascinating traits in improving sulfur utilization and suppressing Li2Sx formation, ultimately enhancing ion storage capacity in Li-S batteries.

Arsenene, antimonene and bismuthene as anchoring materials for lithium-sulfur batteries: A computational study

Xiaotong Mao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the potential of group-VA two-dimensional materials as anchoring materials for lithium-sulfur batteries through DFT calculations. It found that arsenene, antimonene, and bismuthene monolayers have moderate adsorption energies and favorable diffusion barriers for polysulfides, demonstrating their effectiveness in inhibiting the shuttling effect and ensuring efficient diffusion. Moreover, these materials can maintain a balance between binding strength and structural integrity of polysulfides, making them promising cathode anchoring materials for improving Li-S battery performance.
