Import Tariff Liberalization, Employment, and Gender in Ethiopia

Giorgia Giovannetti et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of trade liberalization on local labor markets in Ethiopia, specifically focusing on the gender dimension of employment and the process of structural transformation. Using rich micro-level data, the study evaluates the effect of Ethiopian trade reforms on changes and composition of employment. The findings suggest that districts more exposed to trade liberalization experienced reductions in employment levels, particularly in female employment. Additionally, the research shows that reductions in tariffs lead to a sectoral reallocation from agriculture to services, with a stronger effect on women.

Difference-in-differences with variation in treatment timing

Andrew Goodman-Bacon

Summary: The paper explores the relationship between the two-way fixed effects estimator and all possible two-group/two-period DD estimators, showing that it is a weighted average. A causal interpretation of two-way fixed effects DD estimates requires meeting the parallel trends assumption and constant treatment effects over time.
