Quantitative Determination of Polyphenols and Flavonoids in Cistus x incanus on the Basis of IR, NIR and Raman Spectra

Sonia Pielorz et al.

Summary: This paper compares Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection in mid-infrared, and diffuse reflectance technique in the near-infrared region for the simultaneous quantification of total polyphenols (TPC) and flavonoids (TF) content, as well as the determination of FRAP antioxidant activity of C. incanus material. Utilizing vibrational spectra and partial least squares algorithm, TPC and TF were quantified with RSEPVAL errors in the range of 2.7-5.4%, while FRAP antioxidant activity for validation sets was determined with relative errors ranging from 5.2 to 9.3%. For the analyzed parameters, models constructed using Raman data had the lowest prediction errors. These developed models allow for fast and precise quantification of the studied active compounds in C. incanus material without any chemical sample treatment.

3D (x-y-t) Raman imaging of tomato fruit cuticle: Microchemistry during development

Ana Gonzalez Moreno et al.

Summary: Raman mapping and multivariate data analysis were used to investigate the distribution of cutin, carbohydrates, and phenolics in the cuticle of tomato fruit. Three main components, cutin, polysaccharides, and aromatics, were identified, with phenolic acids and flavonoids showing different distribution patterns during development.

Extracellular and intracellular infection of Botryosphaeria dothidea and resistance mechanism in apple cells

Li Xin et al.

Summary: This research investigated the pathogen infection mode and the relationship between cell death and disease resistance in 'Fuji'/B. dothidea interaction. The study showed that the pathogen infects apple cells both intracellularly and extracellularly, and cell wall-mediated penetration resistance could be important in apple resistance against B. dothidea.

Selection of essential spectra to improve the multivariate curve resolution of minor compounds in complex pharmaceutical formulations

Laureen Coic et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of reducing the hyperspectral imaging data matrix through the selection of essential spectra in the analysis of complex pharmaceutical formulations. The results show that more accurate decomposition can be achieved when only essential spectra are analyzed, compared to analyzing the full dataset.

A Spatial-Temporal Analysis of Cellular Biopolymers on Leaf Blight-Infected Tea Plants Using Confocal Raman Microspectroscopy

Alireza Sanaeifar et al.

Summary: The present study characterized the temporal and spatial variation of biopolymers in cells infected by the tea leaf blight using confocal Raman microspectroscopy. The study found that lignin and phenolic compounds decreased in the vascular bundle as the infection progressed, while cellulose and polysaccharides increased in all parts. The distribution of biopolymers varied with the severity of infection, and a substance was produced within the vascular bundles to prevent the further development of pathogens.

Polyphenolics and Chemical Profiles of Domestic Norwegian Apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) Cultivars

Milica Fotiric Aksic et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study using modern analytical techniques was conducted to investigate the chemical composition of apple fruits from cultivars grown in Western Norway. The study analyzed metals, sugars, organic acids, antioxidant tests, and polyphenol content. The results showed the presence of dominant sugars, organic acids, and metals, as well as the quantification of various polyphenols. These findings provide important data on the quality assessment and differentiation of Norwegian apple samples.

Protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid and relevant defense enzymes correlate closely with walnut resistance to Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explored the correlation between biochemical response and resistance of walnut trees to walnut blight. The results showed that the response of walnut to the disease was characterized by the early accumulation of phenolic compounds at the infected site. Significant differences in antioxidant enzyme activity were observed in the resistant variety at different time points compared to other varieties.

Raman imaging reveals in-situ microchemistry of cuticle and epidermis of spruce needles

Nadia Sasani et al.

Summary: This study explored the native cuticle and epidermal layer of Norway spruce needles using Raman imaging and polarization experiments. Results showed a waxy, crystalline layer on top and strong signals of coumaric acid and flavonoids in the lipidic amorphous cuticle beneath. Non-negative matrix factorization provided the purest component spectra and promoted band assignments, enhancing our understanding of plant cuticle structure and composition.
