Cristiana Cesari et al.

Summary: This minireview focuses on our group's work on Fe, Co and Ni carbide carbonyl clusters and nanoclusters, and relates it to recent literature. It provides a brief introduction, summarizes the general features of molecular carbide carbonyl clusters in Section 2, and then presents specific examples of Fe, Co and Ni carbide carbonyl clusters in the following three sections. Each section discusses both homometallic and heterometallic clusters, as well as their relevant chemical, electrochemical, structural and physical properties. General conclusions are outlined in Section 6.

Evaluating the stability of Ir single atom and Ru atomic cluster oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts

Matej Zlatar et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown improved electrocatalytic performance in various industrially relevant reactions, including oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the stability of SACs has received little attention in the literature. In this study, we evaluate the stability of Ir SAC and highly dispersed Ru catalysts supported by indium doped tin oxide (ITO) using online inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry setup (online ICP-MS). We find that these catalysts exhibit high activity but lower stability, and propose that the change in OER mechanism from adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) to lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) with participation of the support contributes to their lower stability.

Carbon-Supported Bimetallic Ruthenium-Iridium Catalysts for Selective and Stable Hydrodebromination of Dibromomethane

Ali J. Saadun et al.

Summary: The study utilized a platform of carbon-supported Ir-Ru catalysts with distinct metal ratios to systematically investigate the effects of a second metal on reactivity and stability. Catalytic tests revealed ruthenium-doped iridium nanoparticles as a system that combines high CH3Br selectivity with unprecedented stability, outperforming any previously reported catalysts. This superior performance was attributed to the intimate interaction between the two metals, forming ruthenium-poor surface alloys that suppress deactivation mechanisms and over hydrogenation/coking pathways.

Development of New Mixed-Metal Ruthenium and Iridium Oxides as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution: Part I

Jasmine A. Clayton et al.

Summary: In this research, a review of recent studies on oxides of platinum group metals (pgms), specifically ruthenium and iridium, as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is conducted. These materials are used in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for electrolyzers and fuel cells, providing corrosion resistance against carbon. Various structure types, including perovskites, pyrochlores, and hexagonal perovskite-like phases, with complex chemical compositions involving base metals, have been investigated. Chemical synthesis is highlighted as a means for discovering new oxide compositions, particularly for processing into MEAs. Part I introduces the electrocatalytic splitting of water to produce oxygen and hydrogen, and reviews ruthenium and iridium oxide structures for OER catalysis.
