Atomically Dispersed Alkaline-Earth Metals as Active Centers for CO2 Electroreduction to Exclusively Produce Formate

Donghai Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the feasibility of alkaline-earth (AE) metals as active centers in heterogeneous catalysis for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce formate (HCOOH) was theoretically investigated. The results showed that Mg and Ca single-atom catalysts (SACs) embedded in graphene and g-C2N, respectively, can efficiently convert CO2 into HCOOH with high stability. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the rational design of efficient AE metal SACs for CO2 electroreduction and emphasizes the potential of AE metals as active centers in heterogeneous catalysis.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework Mo3(C2O)12 as a promising single-atom catalyst for selective nitrogen-to-ammonia conversion

Zhen Feng et al.

Summary: This study designs a series of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks as single-atom catalysts for the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction. Among them, the Mo-3(C2O)(12) monolayer shows the most promising performance, with sufficient stability, high nitrogen fixation activity, and substantial selectivity.

Iron covalent doping in WB2 to boost its hydrogen evolution activity

Meng Jin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that iron covalent doping can effectively enhance the catalytic activity of tungsten boride in the hydrogen evolution reaction, while also showing catalytic activity towards the nitrogen reduction reaction. However, the selectivity of Fe-WB2 is lower in the nitrogen reduction reaction due to its superior hydrogen evolution reaction activity.

Tuning lattice strain in biphenylene for enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Zhen Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity on biphenylene materials with different biaxial lattice strains was compared through first-principles calculations. It was found that biaxial tensile strains have a negative effect on catalytic activity, while biaxial compressive strains can enhance the catalytic performance. Moderate charge transfer of adsorbed oxygen species promotes catalytic processes and improves catalysis efficiency.

Iron-group electrocatalysts for ambient nitrogen reduction reaction in aqueous media

Benyuan Ma et al.

Summary: Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction has the potential to be an alternative to the industrial Haber-Bosch process for NH3 production due to its low energy consumption and environment friendliness. Iron-group materials show promise as non-noble metal electrocatalysts with cost and performance advantages, but further strategies are needed to improve efficiency and selectivity.

Role of Dihydride and Dihydrogen Complexes in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Single-Atom Catalysts

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) have played a key role in electrochemical water splitting, and a new kinetic model has been proposed to explain their activity, which differs from that of metal surfaces. SACs may form stable HM(H) intermediates, changing the kinetics of the process.

Interfacial Covalent Bonds Regulated Electron-Deficient 2D Black Phosphorus for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reactions

Xia Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-efficiency metal-free electrocatalyst, BP-CN-c, was successfully created with the guidance of DFT calculations, featuring polarized P-N covalent bonds that can effectively regulate electron transfer and promote oxygen adsorption. BP-CN-c not only exhibits excellent oxygen electrocatalytic performance, but also represents the first bifunctional BP-based metal-free oxygen catalyst.
