Evaluation of the difference in adsorption of sodium alginate as an efficient and non-toxic arsenopyrite depressant on the surface of arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite

Hongxin Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, sodium alginate combined with potassium permanganate was used as a selective depressant to separate chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The results showed that sodium alginate was more easily adsorbed on the arsenopyrite surface after potassium permanganate pretreatment. The adsorption of sodium alginate on the mineral surfaces was dominated by chemisorption.

Nitrobenzoate as a flotation depressant for arsenopyrite: A theoretical study of the structure-reactivity relationship

Hongxin Qiu et al.

Summary: By employing density functional theory calculations, this study investigates the structure-reactivity relationship of nitrobenzoate as a flotation depressant for arsenopyrite. The results reveal that O/N heteroatoms play a significant role in the formation of chemical bonds with the metal atoms on the mineral surface, and the reactivity follows the order of m-nitrobenzoate > p-nitrobenzoate > o-nitrobenzoate. Experimental flotation tests further confirm this order. Additionally, the reactive sites of the three nitrobenzoate isomers are examined, showing that they have the same reactive sites but interact differently with the metal atoms.

Selective depression of marmatite by sodium alginate in flotation separation of galena and marmatite

Hongxin Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, sodium alginate (SA) is proposed as an effective green depressant for the selective separation of galena and marmatite. The results showed that the addition of SA before sodium butyl xanthate (SBX) at pH = 11 can selectively depress the flotation of marmatite. SA was found to be selectively adsorbed on the marmatite surface, hindering the subsequent adsorption of the collector and affecting its flotation. The strong adsorption of SA on the marmatite surface was due to its π-backbonding with Fe2+, the active site on the marmatite surface.

Effect of NaCN:ZnSO4 Mixture Molar Ratio and Particle-Size Distribution on Pb-Zn and Fe Selective Separation by Froth Flotation

Ramon Arellano-Pina et al.

Summary: This study examines the depression of sphalerite and pyrite with a NaCN:ZnSO4 mixture in separating Pb-Zn, enriched with Ag, by flotation. The optimal conditions were a 10:1 mixture molar ratio and coarse-size-particle distribution, leading to a successful separation with a lead recovery of 83.70%. Wettability measurements and thermodynamic analysis indicated that cyanide species selectively depressed pyrite and sphalerite, favoring galena floatability.

DFT study of the occurrence state of In and the correlation of In and Fe in sphalerite

Xi Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and relationship of indium (In) and iron (Fe) in sphalerite, as well as their effects on the crystal and electronic structure of sphalerite using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that In can be incorporated into sphalerite by substituting Zn, and the presence of Fe promotes this incorporation. The presence of Fe also enhances the formation of In-S bonds in sphalerite and leads to a more stable crystal structure. The band structure calculations reveal that the impurity levels in the band gap are mainly contributed by the In 5s and Fe 3d orbitals. Spin-polarized calculations suggest that In-Fe sphalerite exhibits a half-metallic ferromagnetic property.

Orbital symmetry matching study on the interactions of flotation reagents with mineral surfaces

Jianhua Chen et al.

Summary: The selectivity of reagents to minerals is crucial, but the mechanism behind it is not fully understood. This study used density functional theory calculations to investigate the orbital symmetry matching between flotation reagents and metal ions on mineral surfaces. The results show that the symmetry matching plays a significant role in determining the collecting ability of the reagents.

Effects of copper ions on dissolution mechanism of marmatite

Xiao-yu Meng et al.

Summary: The dissolution mechanism of marmatite in the presence of Cu2+ was studied using experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The experiments showed that Cu2+ accelerated marmatite dissolution at high temperatures and reversed the trend at low temperatures. DFT calculations further verified the proposed mechanism by showing that the energy of the substitution reaction was more negative than that of the adsorption reaction at high temperatures.

Summary: A QEMSCAN (R) study was conducted to investigate the distribution of sphalerite grains with different iron and manganese content during a multi-stage Zn-Pb-Cu flotation process. The study aimed to understand the effect of sphalerite chemistry on grain size and liberation. The results showed that physical factors, such as grain size and liberation, had a more significant impact on sphalerite flotation than the presence of iron and manganese.

An Investigation into the Effects of Grinding Medium on Interface Characteristics and Flotation Performance of Sphalerite in Cyanide System

Qianfei Zhao et al.

Summary: The strong contamination of the interface is the main problem leading to low flotation efficiency of sphalerite in cyanide tailings. The use of ceramic ball medium reduces the consumption of cyanide and dissolved oxygen, as well as the concentration of ions. SEM-EDS analysis shows that the ceramic ball medium prevents excessive surface oxidation caused by galvanic couple actions, and XPS analysis confirms the optimized chemical environment on the surface of sphalerite with porcelain ball medium. Grinding with ceramic ball medium exhibits excellent performance in the cyanide process, resulting in approximately 5-10% higher flotation efficiency compared to grinding with iron ball media.

Study on the depression mechanism of calcium on the flotation of high-iron sphalerite under a high-alkalinity environment

Shengdong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of iron content and calcium presence on the flotation depression of iron-bearing sphalerite under high alkalinity conditions. The results show that increasing iron content or the presence of calcium leads to increased depression in flotation, reduced adsorption of copper and xanthate, and increased adsorption of metal hydroxides and calcium on the surface of iron-bearing sphalerite. TOF-SIMS results confirm the trend of calcium adsorption at the atomic level, while DFT calculations show lower adsorption energy of CaOH+ on iron-substituted sphalerite surfaces. Overall, increased adsorption of hydroxides and calcium significantly hinder the adsorption of copper and xanthate, ultimately leading to increased flotation depression of high-iron sphalerite with increasing iron content.

Summary: The study found a possible phase transition from sphalerite to chalcopyrite in acidic cupric ions solution, where the cupric ions can selectively replace zinc in marmatite lattices and diffuse into the matrix, forming a strong correlation with pH value variations. This clarifies the action mechanism of cupric ions on sphalerite dissolution in acidic environments.

Selective depression of copper-activated sphalerite by polyaspartic acid during chalcopyrite flotation

Qian Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential selective depressant role of PAPA in the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and Cu-activated sphalerite, revealing its depression mechanism through contact angle, Zeta potential, FT-IR, and ICP measurements. PAPA selectively depresses Cu-activated sphalerite while remaining floatable chalcopyrite, with excellent complexing ability with Cu2+ and prevention of further sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (DDTC) adsorption on the sphalerite surface, leading to selective depression and high recovery in flotation tests of artificially mixed minerals.
