A field study was conducted to assess the human health risks of microcystin toxicity via fish consumption in Lake St. Clair. Microcystins were detected in all fish livers, suggesting that HABs are a pervasive stressor to fish populations, while microcystin levels in fish muscles were consistently low and presented negligible risk.

Health risk assessment of lake water contaminated with microcystins for fruit crop irrigation and farm animal drinking

Summary: The health risks associated with the consumption of microcystin-accumulating crops in regions with toxic cyanobloom occurrences are increasing globally. This field study conducted in Morocco evaluated the health risks of microcystins in raw water used for irrigating fruit crops and watering farm animals. The study found that the levels of microcystin in water and fruit samples posed a high health-risk level to poultry, horses, and pomegranate consumers. Urgent guidelines and nature-based tools are needed for water use and management in microcystin-polluted areas.
