Kinetic Limitations Affect Cloud Condensation Nuclei Activity Measurements Under Low Supersaturation

Jiangchuan Tao et al.

Summary: The commercial continuous-flow streamwise thermal-gradient cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) counter is commonly used for measuring aerosol CCN activity. In this study, we found that droplet growth in the CCN counter is kinetically limited and CCN-active droplets do not reach their theoretical diameters under low supersaturations. Ignoring kinetic growth limitation in CCN identification may result in underestimation of CCN counting and the aerosol hygroscopicity parameter κ by up to 50% for supersaturations lower than 0.1%. We recommend the use of thresholds considering kinetic limitations as new criteria for CCN identification under low supersaturations.

Constraining the Effect of Surfactants on the Hygroscopic Growth of Model Sea Spray Aerosol Particles

Rachel L. Bramblett et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of organic compounds and surfactants on the hygroscopic growth and cloud activation of sea salt/sugar particles. The findings suggest that ionic surfactants enhance the water uptake of particles, while nonionic surfactants have minimal effect. Furthermore, cationic surfactants do not dampen the water uptake of particles, and the complexity of glucose can inhibit the hygroscopic growth induced by nonionic surfactants.

Particle phase-state variability in the North Atlantic free troposphere during summertime is determined by atmospheric transport patterns and sources

Zezhen Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and phase states of free tropospheric aerosol particles that have undergone long-range transport over the North Atlantic Ocean. The results show that these particles are mainly sourced from North America and recirculated over the North Atlantic Ocean. The most abundant particle types are carbonaceous, sea salt, and sea salt with sulfate. Most particles are in the liquid state, but solid and semisolid particles also exist. The study suggests that wildfire-influenced plumes can result in particles with a wide range of viscosities after long-range transport in the free troposphere. Furthermore, this study provides insights into reducing uncertainties about the effects of ambient aerosol particles on climate.

Micro-spectroscopic and freezing characterization of ice-nucleating particles collected in the marine boundary layer in the eastern North Atlantic

Daniel A. Knopf et al.

Summary: This study examines the ability of marine boundary layer aerosol particles to act as ice-nucleating particles (INPs) in typical mixed-phase and cirrus cloud conditions. Results show that these particles can serve as INPs, providing insights for the implementation of ice crystal formation parameterizations in cloud and climate models.

Observations of Aerosol, Cloud, Turbulence, and Radiation Properties at the Top of the Marine Boundary Layer over the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean: The ACORES Campaign

Holger Siebert et al.

Summary: The ACORES campaign in July 2017 focused on investigating aerosol particles, stratocumulus microphysical and radiative properties, and turbulence parameters in the eastern North Atlantic around Graciosa and Pico Islands. The observations revealed high variability of turbulent cloud-top structure on horizontal scales below 100 meters, significant inhomogeneities in cloud-top brightness temperature on scales well below 100 meters, and completely different aerosol properties in the marine boundary layer and free troposphere.

Organic Coating Reduces Hygroscopic Growth of Phase-Separated Aerosol Particles

Weijun Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that secondary aerosol particles exhibit a liquid-liquid phase-separated structure, with the thickness of the organic shell having a significant impact on the hygroscopic growth and phase transition process of the particles. The thicker the organic shell, the lower the hygroscopicity of the particles at low relative humidity, and the phase transition of the core from solid to liquid occurs earlier.

The Impact of Slantwise Descending Dry Intrusions on the Marine Boundary Layer and Air-Sea Interface Over the ARM Eastern North Atlantic Site

E. Ilotoviz et al.

Summary: This study combines observations and reanalysis data to analyze the impact of dry intrusions (DIs) on boundary layer characteristics and clouds. It was found that during the winter months, DIs lead to deepening of the boundary layer, changes in cloud, precipitation, and thermodynamic properties, with substantial cooling and drying of the lower troposphere inducing strong surface heat fluxes. The results suggest that DI events affect the boundary layer and cloud structure at the ENA site approximately 21% of the time in winter months, with different responses of cloud fields to DI-fronts compared to non-DI fronts.

Evidence of free tropospheric and long-range transport of microplastic at Pic du Midi Observatory

S. Allen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of atmospheric microplastic pollution at the Pic du Midi Observatory, indicating free long range transport in the troposphere. The results show evidence of true free tropospheric transport of microplastic particles <50 μm over 4 summer months at an altitude of 2877 meters. Analysis of air/particle history modelling suggests potential global aerosol microplastic transport through intercontinental and trans-oceanic pathways.

Aerosol Composition, Mixing State, and Phase State of Free Tropospheric Particles and Their Role in Ice Cloud Formation

Nurun Nahar Lata et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties and ice nucleation activity of free tropospheric particles collected at a remote observatory in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was found that particles with different transport patterns had significant differences in size-resolved chemical composition, mixing state, and phase state. Particles with higher viscosity were found to be more ice active in the deposition mode at specific temperatures. This research provides a better understanding of the role of long-range transported free tropospheric aerosols in ice cloud formation.

Long-term trends of black carbon and particle number concentration in the lower free troposphere in Central Europe

Jia Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that in cold months, FT conditions were more prevalent than in warm months, while the measured aerosol parameters showed different seasonal patterns for FT and PBL-influenced conditions. Pollutants in PBL-influenced conditions are more likely to be transported to high altitudes due to mountainous topography, leading to higher concentrations and more distinct seasonal variations, whereas lower FT conditions showed decreasing aerosol concentration trends.
