Impacts of groundwater and climate variability on terrestrial groundwater dependent ecosystems: a review of geospatial assessment approaches and challenges and possible future research directions

Chantel Chiloane et al.

Summary: TGDV are crucial ecosystems providing important goods and services in semi-arid environments, but face threats from unsustainable groundwater exploitation due to global climate change and human impacts. Remote sensing studies and integrated techniques are essential to monitor and understand the responses of TGDV to groundwater variability and climate change impacts. Further research is needed to address the challenges and improve delineation of TGDV through advanced technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

Ecological Preferences and Indication Potential of Freshwater Bryophytes-Insights from Croatian Watercourses

Anja Rimac et al.

Summary: A comprehensive survey of Croatian watercourses was conducted to explore the ecological responses of freshwater bryophytes to water chemistry variables and land use. The study found that different species had different preferences for water chemistry and land use, with some species having narrow ecological niches and others having wider ecological tolerance.

Environmental Gradients Shaping the Freshwater Bryophyte Communities of Croatia (Western Balkans)

Anja Rimac et al.

Summary: A comprehensive field survey of watercourses in Croatia identified five community types dominated by bryophytes, which were influenced by climatic, physiographic, and water chemistry parameters. The study found that the Dinaric Ecoregion's clean and basic karstic rivers had certain communities, while the Pannonian Ecoregion's eutrophic water restricted to small rivers had different communities. The most widespread community in Croatia was Cinclidotus, predominantly found in clean karstic rivers belonging to the Dinaric Ecoregion.

Exploring the Role of Cryptic Nitrogen Fixers in Terrestrial Ecosystems: A Frontier in Nitrogen Cycling Research

Cory C. Cleveland et al.

Summary: Biological nitrogen fixation is the largest natural process that introduces new nitrogen into terrestrial ecosystems, supporting the primary productivity of natural and agricultural systems. However, cryptic nitrogen fixation, which occurs through mutualistic or free-living microorganisms in soil, litter, roots, and other sources, is still not well understood. This literature review highlights the variability in cryptic nitrogen fixation rates and calls for more comprehensive measurements and investigations to identify controlling factors and generate new hypotheses.

Bryophyte C:N:P stoichiometry, biogeochemical niches and elementome plasticity driven by environment and coexistence

Marcos Fernandez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study revealed that bryophyte species have C:N:P ratios intermediate between marine plankton and vascular plants, with differentiated biogeochemical niches among species that are phylogenetically conserved. Differences in individual and species-specific elementomes increased with coexistence between species.
