Hope and cancer

David B. Feldman et al.

Summary: Two predominant models of hope in cancer literature are Snyder's Hope Theory and Herth's hope model, both of which have produced brief self-report measures. Evidence shows that hope, as defined in these models, is associated with various psychological variables in cancer patients, including depression, distress, coping, symptom burden, and post-traumatic growth. Recent studies suggest that hope may also predict survival probability in advanced cancer. Surveys indicate that patients and families generally prefer healthcare communication that honestly conveys prognosis, which does not decrease hope but may actually foster it. Several interventions have been developed to enhance hope in cancer patients, generally showing moderate effects.

The cancer epidemic Global significance of cancer and the situation in oncological imaging

Heinz-Peter Schlemmer

Summary: A significant increase in cancer incidence is expected globally, with cancer becoming the leading cause of death in Europe, surpassing cardiovascular disease. A comprehensive approach involving science, medicine, society, and politics is required to address this global problem. High-quality oncological imaging plays a crucial role, as it has been proven to significantly impact care quality and survival rates. Imaging is essential in screening, early detection, multidisciplinary diagnostics, personalized therapy, translational, and clinical research. Moreover, imaging techniques and their development are also of great economic importance. This article aims to provide insights into the global oncology problem and the role of oncological imaging in its management.

Antifungal activity and preliminary mechanism of pristimerin against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Wen-Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a crop-threatening fungus. This study evaluated the antifungal activity of ten pentacyclic triterpenoids against S. sclerotiorum and found that pristimerin showed excellent activity. Further analysis revealed the mode of action of pristimerin and its potential as a fungicide against S. sclerotiorum.

Gaber O. Moustafa et al.

Summary: This study focused on the design and synthesis of new glycyrrhetinic acid (GA)-amino acid peptides and peptide ester derivatives, evaluating their in vitro cytotoxic activity. The results showed promising cytotoxic activity against cancer cells for some of the new peptides, as well as moderate antimicrobial effects against a panel of bacterial and yeast strains.
