Characterisation of ethylene flames under a range of low-oxygen concentrations

Ian J. Shaw et al.

Summary: This study presents new insights into turbulent ethylene jet flames under varying oxygen concentrations of the coflow oxidizer. The results reveal non-monotonic lift-off trends in flame height and show the significant influence of oxidizer temperature on flame properties.

Characteristics of ethylene and methane combustion in a range of high temperature and low oxygen environments

Ian J. Shaw et al.

Summary: A new understanding of turbulent jet flames of natural gas and blends of natural gas with ethylene (C2H4) in a range of preheated oxidizers with reduced oxygen concentrations is presented. Measurements of temperature, hydroxyl radicals (OH), and formaldehyde (CH2O) were taken at different locations downstream of the jet exit plane. The experiments were supplemented with chemical reaction modeling. The results show that increasing the proportion of C2H4 in the fuel leads to an increase in flame front temperature and higher OH number density for a blend of 66% NG and 33% C2H4. The fuel composition has little effect on the jet spread rate, but it does impact the reaction process and ignition delay.
