Atomic symmetry alteration in carbon nitride to modulate charge distribution for efficient photocatalysis

Minhua Ai et al.

Summary: An efficient two-step cystine-mediated strategy was developed to alter the structure symmetry of C3N4, leading to the redistribution of N and C atoms and improved light absorption and carrier recombination. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculation show that the introduction of alkyl groups and nitrogen vacancies can modulate the band structure and activate electron transition, resulting in effective suppression of charge recombination. The distorted carbon nitride exhibits significantly higher photoreaction rates in hydrogen production and RhB degradation compared to the pristine one.

Construction of carbon nitride-based heterojunction as photocatalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation: Important role of carbon dots in enhancing photocatalytic activity

Pei Yang et al.

Summary: The integration of carbon dots (CDs) and carbon nitride (CN) provides an attractive method for synthesizing metal-free carbonaceous catalysts for environmental photocatalytic applications. However, the relationship between the functional structures of CDs and their enhanced photocatalytic activity in CDs/CN composites is still not well understood. This study investigates the efficiency of CDs/CN-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in p-nitrophenol degradation and identifies that CDs enriched with carboxyl groups or doped by pyrrolic-N contribute to photocarrier separation, facilitating PMS activation and p-nitrophenol degradation. Conversely, CDs mainly doped by electron-donating graphitic-N hinder charge separation in the PMS-mediated oxidation process. This research sheds light on the rational design of CDs/CN heterojunctions with high photocatalytic activity.

Efficient photosynthesis of H2O2 via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction by defective g-C3N4 with terminal cyano groups and nitrogen vacancies

Jiaoni Li et al.

Summary: Efficient visible-light-driven H2O2 production and antibiotic degradation are achieved using nitrogen-deficient modified polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a catalyst. The N defects in the framework construct a giant internal electric field (IEF), inhibiting carrier recombination and promoting selective 2-oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This study reveals the synergistic effects of the terminal cyano group and nitrogen vacancies over g-C3N4 for efficient H2O2 photogeneration photosynthesis.

Construction of g-C3N4 with N2C-type defects/MoO3 Z-scheme photocatalyst: Effective mineralization and toxicity reduction of microcystin-LR by multiple free radical degradation pathways

Yuanhao Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study developed a g-C3N4 with N2C-type defects/MoO3 Z-scheme photocatalyst (D-CN/MoO3) for the degradation of microcystin (MC-LR) in visible light. The D-CN/MoO3 could photodegrade 100% of MC-LR within 25 min, which was significantly higher than pure g-C3N4. The degradation mechanism was found to be the selective attack of 1O2 on the Adda side chain of MC-LR and subsequent decarboxylation reaction of h+, leading to effective mineralization and reduced toxicity of MC-LR. The D-CN/MoO3 also demonstrated excellent stability and adaptability, showing potential for decontamination of MC-LR in eutrophic water.

Surface atom rearrangement on carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalysis degradation of antibiotics under visible light

Yunxiong Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen-vacancy and oxygen-substitution modified carbon nitride ((Nv, Os)-CN) with a rearranged surface was fabricated by a low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy. The (Nv, Os)-CN showed higher efficiency in degrading antibiotics under visible light irradiation compared to regular carbon nitride (CN). This enhanced photoactivity can be attributed to the rearranged surface atoms, which promote interfacial charge transfer and build a robust interface. LC-MS and QSAR methods were used to analyze the degraded pathways, intermediates, and risks of the antibiotics. The low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy presented here provides a way to enhance the photoactivity of carbon nitride for antibiotic degradation.

Precisely Tailoring Nitrogen Defects in Carbon Nitride for Efficient Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Qiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Precisely tailoring the nitrogen defects is a promising approach for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of C3N4. In this study, two-coordinated-N vacancies are selectively introduced into the C3N4 framework through a facile Cl- modification method, and the concentration of defects can be easily controlled by varying the usage of Cl- during thermal polymerization. The optimal defective C3N4 exhibits superior hydrogen and oxygen evolution rates and the highest apparent quantum efficiency among reported single-component C3N4 photocatalysts for overall water splitting. The Cl- modification facilitates the introduction of two-coordinated-N vacancies and promotes charge carrier separation efficiency, leading to greatly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency.

Flexible construct of N vacancies and hydrophobic sites on g-C3N4 by F doping and their contribution to PFOA degradation in photocatalytic ozonation

Zesen Chen et al.

Summary: Doping of F into g-C3N4 (CN) effectively regulated N vacancies, hydrophobic sites, and electron rich zone, leading to enhanced photocatalytic ozonation of PFOA. F-CN exhibited superior activity compared to CN, achieving 74.3% PFOA removal in F-CN/Vis/O3 compared to only 57.1% in CN/Vis/O3. The presence of N vacancies played a vital role in the oxidation of PFOA through photogenerated hole (hvb+) oxidation. The hydrophobic sites facilitated mass transfer and enhanced the generation of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) through O3's single electron reduction, while reducing the recombination of hvb+-ecb-. The degradation of PFOA in F-CN/Vis/O3 involved the gradual shortening of perfluoroalkyl chain and loss of the CF2 unit.

Summary: Constructing a high-performance visible-light responsive photocatalyst for remediation of organic pollutants from wastewater has been a significant challenge in recent years. In this study, mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride nano-clusters (NC MCN) were fabricated as a high-activity photocatalyst using SiO2 clusters as a template. The NC MCN photocatalyst showed enhanced light-harvesting efficiency and suppressed electron-hole recombination due to the introduction of structural defects, leading to high catalytic activity and stability in degrading organic pollutants under visible light irradiation.

Ultrathin mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with functional cyano group decoration and nitrogen-vacancy defects for an efficient selective CO2 photoreduction

Junyi Li et al.

Summary: This study prepared ultrathin mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with excellent CO2 photoreduction performance under visible light irradiation. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of cyano group decoration, abundant nitrogen vacancies, and extremely high surface area. This work demonstrates that structural optimization combined with defect design is a powerful approach to improve photocatalytic activity of carbon-based photocatalysts.

Summary: This study presents a facile construction method to obtain ND-g-C3N4 with abundant N vacancies, high crystallinity, hydrophilic surface, small particle size, and increased surface area. The unique structural properties of ND-g-C3N4 result in a significantly redshifted absorption edge and enhanced charge carrier separation, leading to superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance three times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4.
