Study on the law of turbulent flow and self-rotation and revolution of particles in micro-hydrocyclone

Yi Fan et al.

Summary: Global separation energy consumption accounts for a significant portion of total energy consumption, and the development of non-thermal separation methods offers a new direction for global energy development. However, the accuracy of cyclone separation is limited, and no significant breakthroughs have been achieved in this field in the past century. This study proposes a slice test particle image velocimetry (S-PIV) methodology to explore the turbulent flow characteristics of different structures and flow rates in micro-hydrocyclones. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of S-PIV as a replacement for expensive and cumbersome particle analyzers, and establish the relationship between turbulent flow parameters and particle motion.

Experimental study on hydrocyclone desanding of high-viscosity oil

Shijian Zhang et al.

Summary: Crude oil containing sand poses serious safety hazards to the surface gathering system, but wellhead sand removal can effectively eliminate the threat. A hydrocyclone desanding experimental device was developed to explore the factors affecting hydrocyclone separation, such as oil viscosity, water content, and gas injection. The study found the operating parameters for efficient desanding of high-viscosity oil and recommended removing dissolved gas before desanding on-site to enhance resistance to gas interference.

Research on the particle circulation flow and classification performance of multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclones

Duanxu Hou et al.

Summary: The particle circulation flow and classification performance of the cylindrical hydrocyclone and multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone were studied using numerical simulations and physical tests. The results showed that the multi-stage cylindrical hydrocyclone can enhance the circulation flow of certain particles and limit the circulation flow of others, leading to improved classification efficiency.

Optimizing particle translation and self-rotation by adjusting gravity-driven hydrocyclone inclination angle for separation and activation of granular sludge

Jinyi Tian et al.

Summary: A gravity-driven hydrocyclone was proposed for the separation and activation of granular sludge without the need for an intake pump. CFD simulations showed that the inclination angle affected fluid flow, particle motion, and separation performance, but had little influence on particle rotation and translation. The new hydrocyclone achieved efficient separation and the split ratio increased with the inclination angle.

Effects of apex/vortex ratio on the isobaric surface and particle separation performance of a hydrocyclone

Feng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the isobaric surface and flow field in the hydrocyclone with different apex/vortex ratios were investigated via numerical analysis. The research results showed that the pressure and tangential velocity increased with the increasing apex/vortex ratio. The study also revealed that air core can lead to velocity fluctuation, which could cause flow field disorder and reduction in separation efficiency.

Effect of particle self-rotation on separation efficiency in mini-hydrocyclones

Ming-xun Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of particle rotation on the separation efficiency of a mini-hydrocyclone using computational fluid dynamics. The results showed that particles rotate at high velocity near the wall and migrate from the wall to the central axis of the hydrocyclone. Including particle rotation in the simulations improved the accuracy of the simulated separation efficiency.

Effect of cone angles of a hydrocyclone for the separation of waste plastics with low value of density difference

Shuangcheng Fu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of cone angles on the separation of light dispersed plastics (PET) and heavy dispersed plastics (PVC) in a hydrocyclone. The results show that different cone angles have different effects on the separation performance, with the Newton efficiency reaching its peak at an optimum cone angle.

Effect of back pressure on the separation performance of a hydrocyclone

Peikun Liu et al.

Summary: This study uses numerical simulation to investigate the effect of overflow back pressure on the internal flow field and separation performance of hydrocyclones. The results indicate that increasing the overflow back pressure leads to higher energy consumption, increased solid phase yield, higher content of fine particles, lower content of coarse particles, and reduced separation accuracy of the hydrocyclones.

Drill cuttings and drilling fluids (muds) transport, fate and effects near a coral reef mesophotic zone

Ross Jones et al.

Summary: The study aimed to enhance knowledge on impact predictions near sensitive environments during drilling, emphasizing on the need to better characterize drilling fluid discharges to reduce uncertainty. High volume, concentration, and discharge rate water-based drilling mud discharges were identified as the most significant dispersal risk, but the generation of jet-like plumes limited longer-range movement.

DPM simulation of particle revolution and high-speed self-rotation in different pre-self-rotation cyclones

Pengbo Fu et al.

Summary: The study explores the effect of particle pre-rotation on the flow field, revolution, and high-speed self-rotation in cyclones. It was observed that adding a particle pre-rotator significantly impacts the particle movement, with the Parallel Positive Rotation Cyclone (PPR-C) exhibiting the best performance. This research provides theoretical fundamentals for regulating particle self-rotation in cyclones and enhancing pollutant cyclone separation through high-speed particle self-rotation.

A full-scale process for produced water treatment on offshore oilfield: Reduction of organic pollutants dominated by hydrocarbons

Yiqian Liu et al.

Summary: Offshore oil production has raised concerns due to the significant volume of produced water, which contains organic pollutants dominated by hydrocarbons. Traditional separation technologies may not meet the requirements under extreme conditions, such as emulsification and large volumes of produced water. A full-scale treatment process implemented in the Bohai Sea, China, successfully reduced oil content, decreased chemical dosage concentration, and increased liquid and produced water volume, leading to a growth in oil production. This study provides a potential solution to the ecological threats posed by hydrocarbon exploitation in offshore oilfields.
