Understanding the pathogenesis of occupational coal and silica dust-associated lung disease

Kanth Swaroop Vanka et al.

Summary: Workers in mining and construction industries are at increased risk of respiratory and other diseases due to prolonged exposure to harmful levels of airborne particulate matter (PM). Although the relationship between PM exposure and occupational lung diseases has been established, the mechanisms are still not well understood. It is urgently necessary to understand how exposure to different levels and types of PM encountered in these workplaces affects the pathophysiological processes in the airways and lungs, leading to different forms of occupational lung diseases. This information is crucial for setting safe exposure limits, monitoring guidelines, and developing biomarkers for early disease diagnosis.
