Tribological performance analysis of nano-FeS films deposited on the surface of bearing steel

Guotao Zhang et al.

Summary: The sulfur rich nano self-lubricating thin layers were prepared on the bearing surface by low-temperature sulfide permeation technology, which improved the antifriction and antiadhesion properties of the bearing materials. The morphology and composition of the sulfurized layer were characterized, and the tribological properties were analyzed to reveal the mechanism behind the improved properties. The results showed that the sulfurized layer with higher S-element content had better tribological properties and the lubrication effect of sulfide and oil enhanced the antifriction and antiadhesion properties.

Metal-free and green synthesis of a series of new bis(2-alkylsulfanyl-[1,3,4] thiadiazolyl)-5,5′-disulfides and 2,2′-Dibenzothiazyl disulfide via oxidative self-coupling using hydrogen peroxide

Chiu Ling Ong et al.

Summary: Many disulfide and 1,3,4-thiadiazole-1,2-dithiol compounds have been extensively studied in the pharmaceutical industry due to their unique biological properties. In this study, a series of new bis(2-alkylsulfanyl-[1,3,4]thiadiazolyl)-5,5'-disulfide derivatives were successfully synthesized via a simple one-pot synthesis. The method showed high yield and conversion rate, without the formation of by-products.

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of a microalgae-based oil metal working fluid with its petroleum-based and vegetable-based counterparts

Melanie Guiton et al.

Summary: Microalgae has emerged as an alternative resource to terrestrial plant-based biomass. This study presents a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of microalgae-based Metal Working Fluids (MWF) and compares it with vegetable and mineral alternatives. The results show that significant improvements are needed to make microalgae-based MWF more environmentally friendly compared to its alternatives.

Ashless and non-corrosive disulfide compounds as excellent extreme pressure additives in naphthenic oil

Chiu Ling Ong et al.

Summary: Two organo disulfides compounds, DBDS and DODS, have been synthesized and demonstrate excellent EP performance and anti-wear properties in naphthenic base oil, showing superior performance compared to traditional EP additives like MCCP and ZDDP. This is due to the formation of a protective sulfur-based tribofilm on the interface that enhances the EP property.

A novel boron-nitrogen modified castor oil as an ecofriendly and efficient lubricant additive

Ping Liu et al.

Summary: Boron esters, particularly the boron-nitrogen-modified castor oil additive (BNC), show promising potential as green additives for environmental protection. BNC demonstrates good thermal stability, oxidation stability, oil solubility, dispersion stability, lubricity, and biodegradability, effectively enhancing anti-wear and friction-reducing properties of oils. Additionally, BNC contributes to the formation of lubrication films involving elemental boron, nitrogen, and oxygen, reducing friction and wear, while also promoting biodegradation of oils through the involvement of elemental nitrogen. The synthesized BNC additive proves to be a potential ecofriendly and effective lubricant in industrial applications.

Tribological behavior of a novel organic molybdenum containing dimercaptothiadiazole as a multifunctional additive in biodegradable base oil

Jiao Wang et al.

Summary: Organic molybdenum friction modifier plays a crucial role in lubrication, and the synthesized thiadiazole organic molybdenum as an additive has shown significant effects in reducing friction coefficient and wear scar diameter, as well as improving extreme pressure performance. The functional groups in the additive molecule can form a friction film rich in sulfate and molybdate to enhance the friction-reducing, anti-wear, and load-bearing capacity of the base oil.
