Multi-patch isogeometric topology optimization for cellular structures with flexible designs using Nitsche?s method

Jie Gao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a Multi-Patch Isogeometric Topology Optimization (MP-ITO) method for the design of periodic or graded cellular structures. The method applies Nitsche's method to couple non-conforming meshes and conducts multi-patch isogeometric analysis. A multi-patch topology description model is developed to improve smoothness and continuity of boundaries at interfaces within adjacent subdomains. The effectiveness and capabilities of the MP-ITO method are demonstrated through numerical examples.

From Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Toward Human-Aided Design (HAD): An Isogeometric Topology Optimization Approach

Yingjun Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel design mode, called human-aided design (HAD), to replace conventional computer-aided design (CAD). In HAD, computers can automatically complete product design using a new isogeometric topology optimization (ITO), while humans assist in making slight modifications. An embedded domain ITO is introduced for designing complex models with irregular domains, and editable geometric models of optimized results can be generated automatically. Experimental results on three different examples demonstrate the potential of the HAD mode to deliver high-quality optimized models, suggesting it as a revolutionary technology to transform the current design mode.

A machine-learning framework for isogeometric topology optimization

Zhaohui Xia et al.

Summary: In this paper, an isogeometric topology optimization method based on deep neural networks is proposed, which effectively reduces the computational time of optimization while ensuring high accuracy. The machine-learning dataset is obtained during early iterations with the IGA-FEA two-resolution SIMP method. Online dataset generation significantly reduces data collection time and enhances relevance to the design problem. The proposed model's generality and reliability have been verified through a series of 2D and 3D design examples, and its time-saving advantage becomes more pronounced as the design scale increases. Furthermore, controlled experiments have studied the impacts of neural network parameters on the results.

CMTO: Configurable-design-element multiscale topology optimization

Mi Xiao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a configurable-design-element multiscale topology optimization (CMTO) framework, which includes complex shape, rational distribution, efficient prediction, well connection, robust printing and other design elements. The significant elements in CMTO are elaborated, which include geometric description of macrostructures and microstructures, property distribution of microstructures within a macrostructure and material distribution within a microstructure, property prediction of microstructures, connectivity between adjacent microstructures, and manufacturability of multiscale structures by 3D-printing. The design of 2D and 3D thermal carpet cloak is provided to demonstrate the implementation of CMTO. Simulated and experimental results show its powerful capability in designing multiscale structures. CMTO is flexible and easy-to-implement, which will greatly enrich the methods in the field of structural optimization and hopefully open a door to the design of novel structures with extraordinary properties, such as all kinds of metamaterials.

A weighted Nitsche's method for interface problems with higher-order simplex elements

Wen Jiang et al.

Summary: We propose a numerical strategy based on a weighted Nitsche's approach to model interface problems with higher-order simplex elements. The presented method generalizes the weighted Nitsche's approach to higher-order simplices, deriving closed-form analytical expressions for the stabilization parameter and prescribing weights for the discrete fluxes. The proposed weighting yields better conditioned systems and improves the geometrical representation of curved interfaces through hierarchical local refinement.

Summary: This paper presents the application of the least squares stabilized symmetric Nitsche method for enforcement of Dirichlet boundary conditions to the finite cell method. The method, combined with finite cell stabilization, results in a symmetric positive definite stiffness matrix and relies solely on elementwise stabilization, without introducing additional filling. The paper provides a priori error estimates and bounds on the condition numbers.

Explicit and efficient topology optimization for three-dimensional structures considering geometrical nonlinearity

Guikai Guo et al.

Summary: In this paper, a geometrically nonlinear topology optimization method for three-dimensional structures using moving morphable bars is proposed to reduce design variables and enhance computational efficiency by accelerating the convergence process. The element density function with respect to moving morphable bars is obtained through a Heaviside approximation of distance functions, without the need for coordinate transformation, for deriving geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and establishing various topology optimization models.

An efficient approach for dynamic-reliability-based topology optimization of braced frame structures with probability density evolution method

Jia-Shu Yang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method for solving dynamic reliability-based topology optimization (DRBTO) problems by combining the PDEM, ground structure approach, and SIMP model. The first-passage probability is considered as the objective or constraint function, and an approximate formulation based on IRPs is used for improved numerical efficiency. Adjoint sensitivity analysis is introduced to avoid extra numerical efforts, and the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) is employed to effectively solve the DRBTO problems. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated through a case study on a braced frame structure.
