Untangling the effect of solids content on thermal-alkali pre-treatment and anaerobic digestion of sludge

Jiaxin Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the key role of total solids (TS) content in the thermal-alkaline pre-treatment (TAP) and anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge. Optimal TS content enhances sludge disintegration and methane production, while excessive TS content deteriorates sludge fluidity and hampers the disintegration process. Maintaining an appropriate TS content is crucial for efficient TAP and AD technology.

The coupling system of magnetite-enhanced thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification for refractory organics removal from anaerobic digestate food waste effluent (ADFE)

Xing Fan et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to remove refractory organics and nitrogen from high-temperature anaerobic digestate food waste effluent. Iron-based materials were used to enhance the performance of thermophilic hydrolysis-acidification. Magnetite showed the best strengthening effect and the coupling system achieved high nitrate removal efficiency and reduced the fluorescence intensity of refractory organics. Microbiological analysis showed that magnetite increased the relative abundance of hydrolytic acidifying bacteria.

The combination of aerobic and microaerobic promote hydrolysis and acidification of rice straw and pig manure: Balance of insoluble and soluble substrate

Shuyu Xiang et al.

Summary: Separated hydrolysis and acidification is an effective method for anaerobic digestion of lignocellulose. Aeration can accelerate the degradation of volatile solids, especially lignocellulose. After 4 days of aerobic treatment, there was a balance in the degradation of insoluble substrate and consumption of soluble substrate. Candida, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Acetobacter played a positive role in this balance.

Particle size effects in microbial characteristics in thermophilic anaerobic digestion of cattle manure containing copper oxide

Yuanyuan Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the roles of different particle sizes of copper oxide (CuO) in thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) on methane production, microbial diversity, and functions. The results showed that bulk-, micron-, and nano-CuO had varying degrees of promotion on methane production. Microbial community analysis revealed that different particle sizes of CuO affected bacterial community composition more than archaeal diversity. Metabolic pathway analysis showed that only the micron-CuO promoted energy-related metabolism and material transformation in bacteria, while nano-CuO and bulk-CuO were important for methanogenic activity and methane metabolism, respectively.

Reutilization of waste crawfish shell and sludge for efficient volatile fatty acids production by synchronously regulating the bioavailable substrates and microbial metabolic traits

Shiyu Fang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the feasibility of using crawfish shell wastes (CSW) and waste active sludge (WAS) for anaerobic fermentation to generate volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The addition of CSW significantly promotes the solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification processes, leading to increased VFAs production. Carbohydrate metabolism and functional anaerobes play crucial roles in VFAs generation. Favorable fermentation conditions induced by CSW conditioning enhance microbial activities and metabolic functions.

Metagenomics reveals bacterioplankton community adaptation to long-term thermal pollution through the strategy of functional regulation in a subtropical bay

Lijuan Ren et al.

Summary: Thermal effluents from coastal nuclear power plants have a negative impact on local marine ecosystems, particularly on the functionality of bacterioplankton. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that long-term thermal pollution significantly decreased the metabolic potentials of bacterioplankton and resulted in a shift in the community structure. The bacterioplankton adapted to the high-temperature stress by up-regulating genes involved in various biological processes.

Co-occurrence of autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification in electrolysis assisted constructed wetland packing with coconut fiber as solid carbon source

Xing Fan et al.

Summary: This study constructed an electrolysis assisted constructed wetland (E-CW) using coconut fiber and solid carbon sources to treat wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. The E-CW showed significantly higher removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) compared to the traditional constructed wetland (CW) without electrolysis. The current intensity also had a significant effect on nitrogen removal efficiency and the release of carbon sources from coconut fiber. The study identified the main functional nitrogen-removing and lignocellulose degradation microbes in the E-CW system, providing a new perspective for advanced nutrients removal of WWTP effluent in constructed wetlands.

Strategy to enhance semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of food waste by combined use of calcium peroxide and magnetite

Lirong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the conversion of organics to methane in the semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of food waste by using CaO2 and magnetite. The results showed that the addition of CaO2 and magnetite increased methane production and optimized the relationship between fermentation bacteria and methanogenic archaea, leading to an overall improvement in methane production.

Effects of pH Adjustment on the Release of Carbon Source of Particulate Organic Matter (POM) in Domestic Sewage

Lei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the carbon source release efficiency of particulate organic matter (POM) from domestic sewage by adjusting the pH. The results showed that adjusting the pH to 11 resulted in the highest carbon source yield, while adjusting the pH to 3 was more beneficial for phosphorus recovery. Microbial community analysis revealed that the pH 11 treatment promoted the enrichment of proteolytic and polysaccharide hydrolytic bacteria, leading to the highest carbon release.

Effect of calcium peroxide pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of primary and secondary sludge of A2/O process

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluates the impact of calcium peroxide (CP) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of primary and secondary sludge. The results show that CP pretreatment can effectively eliminate fecal coliform and promote the solubilization of secondary sludge. Furthermore, CP pretreatment increases methane production potential, reduces harmful substances, and facilitates the subsequent treatment of biogas slurry. This research is of great significance for pretreatment technology of waste sludge and the application of CP in wastewater treatment plants.
