Nickel and zinc micronutrient availability in Phanerozoic oceans

Tim C. Sweere et al.

Summary: Nickel and zinc are bio-essential micronutrients in the ocean, with differences in their biological functions and geochemical behavior. Changes in their availability over time may have influenced phytoplankton evolution. By analyzing sediment data, this study reveals long-term changes in Ni and Zn availability and their connection to (bio)geochemical conditions on Earth's surface.

Variable local basin hydrography and productivity control the uranium isotope paleoredox proxy in anoxic black shales

Kimberly Lau et al.

Summary: Geochemical proxies such as isotopic compositions and sedimentological indicators are used to reconstruct marine redox landscapes, with uranium isotope fractionation being a promising approach. However, the controls on delta U-238 variability and associated isotopic fractionations are not fully understood, making the interpretation of records challenging. Local depositional controls, such as productivity and sedimentation rates, play a significant role in the U isotope offset in reducing settings, indicating the need to consider these uncertainties in quantitative models of global redox conditions.

Spatial heterogeneity of redox-sensitive trace metal enrichments in upper Ediacaran anoxic black shales

Chengsheng Jin et al.

Summary: This study measured and compared proxies for marine redox conditions, total organic carbon, and water mass restriction in two regions of the Nanhua Basin in South China. The results show spatial heterogeneity of RSTE enrichments in anoxic black shales during the late Ediacaran. The findings highlight the influence of local factors on RSTE enrichments and suggest the difficulty of investigating global redox conditions based on local RSTE proxies.
