Liquid-solid ratio during hydrothermal carbonization affects hydrochar application potential in soil: Based on characteristics comparison and economic benefit analysis

Hongyu Si et al.

Summary: Returning straw-like agricultural waste to the field through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is important for waste utilization, soil improvement, and carbon sequestration. This study proposes strategies to optimize the liquid-solid ratio (LSR) of HTC and evaluates the stability, soil application potential, and economic benefits of corn stover-based hydrochar under different LSRs. The results show that reducing LSR increases the dissolved organic carbon content, but does not significantly affect other properties of the hydrochar. The optimized LSR enhances soil application potential and economic benefits.

Study on the process wastewater reuse and valorisation during hydrothermal co-carbonization of food and yard waste

Hari Bhakta Sharma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reusability and valorization of process wastewater generated during co-hydrothermal carbonization of organic fraction of municipal solid waste. The anaerobic digestion of process water and its recirculation up to five times enhanced the fuel properties of hydrochar, leading to increased energy yield, carbon content, calorific value, and overall combustion characteristics. The presence of high organic and ionic species in recirculated process water promoted the carbonization process and reduced the water related burden, creating a cleaner production system for renewable solid biofuels production.

Life cycle assessment on the treatment of organic waste streams by anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization and incineration

Felix Mayer et al.

Summary: By analyzing the environmental and economic performance of custom treatment paths for organic waste streams in Germany, it was found that anaerobic digestion followed by spreading of digestate is beneficial for food waste and OFMSW, while direct incineration is a preferable option for waste wood. The implementation of an HTC process for OFMSW and food waste is also viable, but must be optimized for an environmentally friendly heat source. In some cases, cascading anaerobic digestion with the HTC-process can be a suitable alternative.
