Catalytic upgrading of ethanol to higher alcohols over nickel-modified Cu-La2O3/Al2O3 catalysts

Jinfeng He et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of nickel and nickel free modified Cu-La2O3/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared and applied for the catalytic upgrading of ethanol to higher alcohols. The addition of an appropriate amount of NiO effectively promoted ethanol upgrading to higher alcohols, by increasing the amount of surface Cu active species and optimizing the acid-base properties of Cu-based catalysts, enhancing the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation capacity and aldol condensation activity of the catalysts.

The selective ethanol Guerbet condensation over alkali metal-doped sepiolite

Giulia Balestra et al.

Summary: In this study, alkali metal-doped sepiolite based catalysts were developed for the up-grading of ethanol through the Guerbet reaction mechanism. The catalysts were prepared by wetness impregnation with aqueous solution containing alkali metal precursors salts over calcined sepiolite, and finally activated at 500℃ in air. The highest yield (18%) was obtained at 400℃ with the catalyst consisting of sepiolite, calcined at 500℃, impregnated with 7 wt% of Cs. This study proves that ad hoc modified natural sepiolites with alkali metals are effective catalysts for the Guerbet upgrading of ethanol.

Highly Selective and Stable Cu Catalysts Based on Ni-Al Catalytic Systems for Bioethanol Upgrading to n-Butanol

Yan Xiao et al.

Summary: The catalytic upgrading of ethanol into butanol through the Guerbet coupling reaction has been widely studied due to the abundance of bioethanol and the versatility of butanol applications. Four different supported Cu catalysts were used to investigate the catalytic performances for ethanol conversion. It was found that Ni-containing catalysts showed better reactivity, Al-containing catalysts exhibited better stability, and Ni-Al catalytic systems had a synergistic effect on ethanol conversion, butanol selectivity, and catalyst stability. Various characterizations were applied to analyze the properties of different catalysts, and it was found that Cu species provided active sites for ethanol dehydrogenation/hydrogenation, while the support derived from Ni-Al-LDH supplied appropriate acid-base sites for aldol condensation, resulting in high butanol selectivity. Moreover, catalysts with strong reducibility, such as Cu/NiO, were easily deactivated during the Guerbet coupling process.

Techno-economic analysis of cellulosic ethanol conversion to fuel and chemicals

Steven D. Phillips et al.

Summary: This paper describes the techno-economic assessment of producing hydrocarbon fuels from corn stover-derived ethanol, considering multiple scenarios including co-producing higher-value compounds. The results suggest that the hydrothermal liquefaction process of the residual lignin has significant cost advantages compared to burning. Conversion of ethanol to butanol also shows favorable economics, while the economic performance of butadiene process is influenced by market prices.
