Determination of adsorption parameters in shale gas resource/reserve calculation: Case study of Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin

Qun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the problems in determining the isothermal adsorption parameters in the calculation of shale gas resources/reserves and proposed a new method. The results showed that there were issues such as poor fitting relation between isothermal adsorption parameters and total organic carbon content (TOC), difficulty in the conversion of Van't Hoff equation, and difficulty in the direct application of water saturation (Sw) in resource/reserves calculation. By integrating the Langmuir adsorption model with the Henry adsorption model and introducing a new parameter -Henry constant a, the problem of poor direct fitting relation between Langmuir pressure (pL) and TOC was solved. The study also found that water saturation affects the isothermal adsorption capacity and in-situ stress affects the adsorption capacity of shale.

Differential impact of clay minerals and organic matter on pore structure and its fractal characteristics of marine and continental shales in China

Jiaqi Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of organic matter, clay minerals and organo-clay composites on the pore structure and pore complexity of shale reservoirs. The results showed that the type and maturity of macerals, illite, kaolinite, and organo-clay composites are the main factors influencing shale pore development. The study also found that different clay mineral types have different effects on shale pore structure and pore complexity.

Shale gas characterisation for hydrocarbon accumulation and brittleness by integrating a rock-physics-based framework with effective reservoir parameters

Zhiqi Guo et al.

Summary: Efficient exploration and development of shale gas require accurate assessment of hydrocarbon accumulation and brittleness in reservoirs. This study presents a new rock-physics-based framework to evaluate these properties and provides reliable estimation methods. The results can help identify geological and engineering sweet spots and locate promising shale gas areas.

Assessment of multi-scale pore structures and pore connectivity domains of marine shales by fractal dimensions and correlation lengths

Yuchen Fan et al.

Summary: Digital rock technology provides realistic pore structure information for shale reservoir evaluation, but the characterization of multi-scale pore size distribution and pore connectivity has been challenging. This study introduces a novel method called FracD to obtain continuous multi-scale PSD curves of shales by extracting fractal pore structure information from pore network models at micro- and nano-scales. The method successfully computes PSD curves for two shale samples from the Sichuan Basin and introduces a percolation correlation length parameter for pore connectivity assessment.

Organo-Facies and Mineral Effects on Sorption Capacity of Low-Maturity Permian Barakar Shales from the Auranga Basin, Jharkhand, India

Divya Kumari Mishra et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significance of both organic and inorganic constituents on the sorption capacity of shale samples. Results suggest a weak but positive correlation between total organic content (TOC) and methane sorption capacity (MSC) and Si values, indicating complex relationships that may involve bitumen retention in sample pore spaces. Further research is needed to fully understand the influence of individual clay mineral types on MSC.

The geochemical and pore characteristics of a typical marine-continental transitional gas shale: A case study of the Permian Shanxi Formation on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin

Zhen Qiu et al.

Summary: The Permian Shanxi Formation in China is expected to be a potential economic gas shale for exploration and development, with organic-rich shales enriched in clay minerals and mesopores as the predominant pore type. The development of organic-hosted pores in the shale exhibits differences when compared to marine gas shales globally, attributed to variations in kerogen types. However, the presence of micropores and mesopores in the samples indicates sufficient space for gas storage, providing crucial theoretical guidance for further exploration and development of transitional shale gas.

Pore structure representations based on nitrogen adsorption experiments and an FHH fractal model: Case study of the block Z shales in the Ordos Basin, China

Houfeng He et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the pore structure of shale using various research methods and analyses the components of shale samples from the Ordos Basin in China. It found that the shale is mainly composed of kaolinite, illite, and quartz, and exhibits significant fractal characteristics. The relationships between pore parameters and fractal dimensions were also examined.
