First Observation of the Scintillation Cascade in Tb3+-Doped Quaternary Garnet Ceramics

Mikhail Korzhik et al.

Summary: This study reports a mechanism of firefly high-scintillation light yield (LY) in terbium-doped quaternary garnet ceramics. The luminescence excitation efficiency is defined through measurements with the synchrotron source, showing a quantum yield Q > 1 below the photon multiplication energy range. The cascade of photons is explained by the high quantum yield of the luminescence at excitation in lower mixed states, the cross-relaxation providing the excitation transition, and the relaxation of configuration that leads to future emission.

Role of the Dilution of the Gd Sublattice in Forming the Scintillation Properties of Quaternary (Gd,Lu)3Al2Ga3O12: Ce Ceramics

Mikhail Korzhik et al.

Summary: By doping with super-stoichiometric gadolinium additive or co-doping with a low concentration of magnesium, phosphorescence in quaternary garnet can be effectively suppressed, confirming that it is not an intrinsic property of the material. Monte-Carlo simulation of electronic excitation transfer shows that hopping migration along the gadolinium sublattice plays a crucial role in forming the scintillation kinetic parameters. Substituting the integrity of the gadolinium sublattice with heavier lutetium ions increases the role of self-trapped states in the excitation of Ce3+ ions, ensuring an increase in the fraction of short (about 20 ns) and very long (about 600 ns) components in the scintillation kinetics.

Optical properties of Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped ZnS quantum dots

N. X. Ca et al.

Summary: Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped ZnS quantum dots were synthesized through a simple wet chemical method. The effect of Tb3+ concentration on the structural and optical properties of the co-doped QDs was thoroughly investigated. The energy transfer process was enhanced by the doping with Ce3+ and was dominated by dipole-dipole interaction. The co-doped QDs exhibited long decay times and potential applications in photovoltaic, photocatalysis, and biosensing.

The scintillation mechanisms in Ce and Tb doped (GdxY1-x)Al2Ga3O12 quaternary garnet structure crystalline ceramics

M. Korzhik et al.

Summary: For the first time, the scintillation mechanisms and performance parameters of quaternary (Gd,Y)(3)Al2Ga3O12 compositionally disordered polycrystalline garnet type ceramics doped with Ce or Tb were investigated. It was found that the light yield dependence on Gd content in the composition was similar for both dopants. The highest light yield achieved in Tb doped samples was four times higher than in Ce doped samples, which was achieved by tuning the resonance conditions for energy transfer from Gd subsystem to Tb3+ activators by varying Gd content in the matrix. The exceptional role of the Gd3+ subsystem in forming the high light yield of Tb doped quaternary garnets under different kinds of ionizing radiation was emphasized.

(Gd1-xTbx)3(Al1-yGay)5O12 green phosphors with high quantum yield and low thermal quenching via modulation the Ga3+ admixture

Guanghuai Peng et al.

Summary: (Gd1-xTbx)3(Al1-yGay)5O12 garnet green phosphors were synthesized via solid-state reaction method, with the optimal synthesis conditions identified as high Ga3+ content and 10% Tb3+ content. The luminescence properties and thermal stability of the phosphors strongly depended on the Ga3+ content. The (Gd0.9Tb0.1)3(Al0.6Ga0.4)5O12 phosphor exhibited the highest emission intensity, quantum efficiency, and thermal stability, making it a potential candidate for green phosphors in lighting and displays.
